Shape of the Mercedes Logo

During the World War I, Benz & Cie. and DMG were under severe financial pressure caused by debts and poor sales. As a result, both the companies agreed on a “mutual agreement” to sell their products under each others’ names. It was when the now-iconic Mercedes Benz logo was designed and featured on the products of both companies. It has now become one of the world’s most popular, adored and instantly recognizable logos.

The Mercedes Benz logo was conceptualized by Gottlieb Daimler, the pioneer automotive engineer and industrial designer who played a vital role in establishing the company. It was first introduced in 1909. The logo comprises of an illustration of a three-pointed star that symbolizes the company’s “domination of the land, the sea, and the air”. When Daimler died in March 1900, Wilhelm Maybach became the company’s operational head and popularized various Daimler cars with the assistance of a wealthy European entrepreneur named Emile Jellinek.

The Daimler cars became immensely popular and sold in huge numbers. Jellinek advised Maybach to design lighter, lower and more powerful cars which he named after his elder daughter, Mercedes. That’s how the legendary company’s name was born. When the merger with Benz & Cie. took place in 1926, the Benz laurel wreath was added to the Mercedes logo to depict the union of the two separate business identities.

The Mercedes logo is an extremely effective corporate logo and due its striking simplicity, clarity and consistency, it is very easy to remember and recognize.
