EXISTING SEWERAGE SYSTEM
An under ground sewerage scheme for Tuticorin Corporation was sanctioned by the Government of Tamil Nadu 1984 and the Sewerage collection system with pump stations, installed for a part of the town in 1984. A sewage treatment plant with oxidation ponds to handle the sewage generated in Tuticorin was constructed at Tharuvaikulam Village, situated 7.5 Km. from the town on Mandapam Road, in an area of nearly 500 acres. The following data available with the Tuticorin Corporation on the existing sewerage system was collected for the purpose of review.

The available date given by the Corporation was studies in detail and observed the following.
- The existing sewerage collection system is executed fully in zone IV and partially in zone
- The drawings given by the Corporation indicates only the sewer diametres and length but not the invert levels, which are required to assess the capacity of the sewerage system.
- Only stoneware pipes and CI pipes are used in the existing sewerage collection system.
- 3 Nos. of sub pumping station and one main pumping station is provided for the existing sewerage system.
