University Campus Suffolk
University Campus Suffolk
(UCS) is an exciting and innovative 50:50 joint venture between the
University of East Anglia and
the University of Essex. UCS was
created in August 2007 in order to establish a university campus in Suffolk,
one of the few counties in England without a university of its own.
The UCS network encompasses a main campus in the Suffolk county town of
Ipswich, with smaller regional campuses linked to FE Colleges, together
forming the UCS Learning Network. Launched on 1 August 2007, UCS aims
to widen access to higher education in a region where participation rates in
HE have been lower than the national average.
Successful
UCS students receive a joint degree awarded by the University of Essex and
the University of East Anglia. Academic standards and quality assurance
arrangements at UCS are overseen by the Joint Academic Committee, a joint
sub-committee of the Senates of the University of East Anglia and the
University of Essex on which the two validating universities have majority
membership and each UCS member institution is represented. There is also an
underpinning structure of staff cross-representation across Essex, UEA and
UCS academic committees.
The joint venture is managed by a company limited by guarantee -
University Campus Suffolk Ltd – and the University of Essex and University
of East Anglia are each represented on the Company Board.
Students can study for a UCS degree at the following UCS regional
centres:
UCS Ipswich is the main campus 'hub' of the UCS network,
centrally located in the Ipswich Education Quarter, on and around the town's
exciting and rapidly re-developing Waterfront. UCS Ipswich was established
from the former HE sector of Suffolk College and officially came into
existence in August 2007. UCS Ipswich has a substantial and
well-established portfolio of HE provision, with undergraduate and
postgraduate courses spanning a wide range of subjects including Art and
Design, Business and Management, Computing, Education, Film and Media
Studies, Health, Nursing and Midwifery, Humanities, Social Sciences and
Initial Teacher Training for the lifelong learning sector.
UCS
Bury St Edmunds is based at West Suffolk College, a
well-established and successful FE College with Beacon College status.
The College has a strong focus on vocational education and the provision of
learning opportunities that meet the needs of the local community. UCS Bury
St Edmunds offers a range of Foundation degrees in Art, Graphic Design,
Computing, Construction, Engineering, Health, Logistics and Transport and
Management, as well as degree courses in Business Management, Education,
English and History, and Initial Teacher Training for the lifelong learning
sector.
UCS Great Yarmouth is based at Great Yarmouth College’s
Southtown campus, just over the border in Norfolk. Great Yarmouth College
is an expanding FE College with an emphasis on vocational education and
community learning. UCS Great Yarmouth aims to triple the number of HE
students in the Great Yarmouth locality, opening opportunities for students
of all ages and backgrounds to access degrees without leaving their local
area. HE students at UCS Great Yarmouth can study subjects such as
Computing, Counselling, Engineering, Fashion, Music, Photography and Initial
Teacher Training for the lifelong learning sector.
UCS Lowestoft is based at Lowestoft College, a medium-sized general
FE College with an emphasis on vocational education to meet the needs of
individuals, the community and the local economy in this distinctive region
of north-east Suffolk. At UCS Lowestoft, HE students can study degrees
subjects such as Business Management, Design, Early Years and Initial
Teacher Training for the lifelong learning sector.
UCS Otley is based at Otley College, a mixed FE/HE
institution offering a range of qualifications with a focus on the
land-based sector. The vast majority of provision at the College is at FE
level, with HE resources concentrated on the development of Foundation
degrees in vocational areas where the College has strong links with regional
employers. UCS Otley offers Foundation degree level study in subjects such
as Animal Management, Equine Performance, Landscape and Garden Design, and
Species and Ecosystem Conservation, plus Initial Teacher Training courses
for the lifelong learning sector.
UCS Suffolk New College is also located in the Ipswich
education quarter, alongside the main UCS Ipswich campus, and will soon be
housed in a state-of the-art new building. Suffolk New College was created
from the former FE sector of Suffolk College and officially established on
the launch of UCS in August 2007. While the College focuses primarily on
the delivery of further education and training, UCS Suffolk New College also
offers undergraduate degree courses in Construction, together with Initial
Teacher Training for the lifelong learning sector.
