Shape and Color of the 49ers Logo

The earliest known 49ers logo depicted a mustached forty-niner gold miner, wearing a red shirt and plaid pants, from the 1849 California Gold Rush. The miner in this vintage emblem appears to jump in midair with his hat coming off as he fires pistols in each hand. His right hand almost shots his foot, while the left one shapes “forty-niners” from its smoke.

The alternate logo of the San Francisco 49ers consisted of a shield-shaped crest containing the number “49″, “SF” in its lower left quadrant and a football in the upper right quadrant. The logo underwent a major redesign in 1962 with the introduction of the iconic “SF” within the center of a red oval.

There have been only a few minor overhauls over the years; more notably the addition of a black outline on the intertwined “SF” in 1989 and a gold trimming on the inside of the oval in 1996.

The red color in the 49ers logo represents passion, energy and optimism while the gold color depicts excellence and rich tradition of the team.
