National Student Survey: UEL student satisfaction reaches all time high

With record numbers of prospective students set to start searching for university places this week, the University of East London has recorded its highest ever student satisfaction rating.

In the National Student Survey (NSS) results released by HEFCE earlier today (Wednesday, 17 August 2011), UEL has seen its overall student satisfaction rating increase from 76 per cent to 81 per cent – a significant increase of 5 per cent. In this latest survey, UEL also experienced a rise of 21 places in the overall table of UK universities and recorded a 97 per cent satisfaction rating in relation to its teacher training.

The results of the survey, conducted by Ipsos MORI, provide valuable information for prospective students, and help universities and colleges to further improve the education they provide. The NSS is broken down into seven categories, such as ‘quality of teaching on my course’ and ‘learning resources’, and UEL has recorded significant increases in every single category.

Speaking in response to the National Student Survey, Graham Curtis, UEL Pro Vice-Chancellor for Learning, Teaching and Student Experience, welcomed the results by saying: “We are delighted that all the hard work of our staff and students has paid off with these results. We are particularly pleased that our rating is underpinned by large increases in our scores for teaching, feedback and academic support.

“This academic core is essential to any university. We are also very proud of our score for personal development, which is significantly above the national average. Our mission as a university is to give opportunities to everyone. By enabling our students to develop the right skills and attitude, through everything from competitive sport to entrepreneurship training, we can change their lives in a big way.”

Maria Kyriacou, UEL Student Union President and NSS London Ambassador for 2011, said: "The National Students Survey offers students an opportunity to give feedback on all aspects of university life. I was happy to learn that the commitment of the Students’ Union (SU) and university has brought about a welcomed shift in our students’ experience.

" We at the SU are also looking forward to working closely with the university in assuring that the full feedback gained is used to further develop the full students’ experience."

A total of 1,872 UEL final-year undergraduates took part in this year’s NSS.
