European Capital of Culture is considered to be one of the most successful projects of the EU.
It is a highly prestigious event, a kind of “Olympics in Culture”, the fruit of which is reaped by the city and region not only in the particular year but also in the years and decades that follow.
In 2015, the title of ECC will be granted to two towns: one Czech and one Belgian.
The towns that become European Capitals of Culture for the particular year are the sought-after places of destination for many tourists, as the town is given a new face. The local people of the town and region themselves frequently participate in this transformation.
Dear all,
As you are going to read these lines you already have manifested your interest in the candidature of the City of Pilsen for European Capital of Culture 2015 and I would like to thank you for it.
Here we have an extraordinary opportunity to promote Pilsen at an international level and show off the cultural heritage and traditions of our region. Pilsen is a capital city located at a confluence of four rivers, from where the Emperor Rudolf II ruled the Roman Empire for almost one year, where the first book was printed in Bohemia, where the first Czech stone theatre building was erected, and where the Czech, German and Jewish cultural traditions and religions influenced themselves without any conflict.
What towns were granted the title in the past?
In the past, traditional cultural centres such as Athens, Amsterdam, Paris, Krakow and Prague, as well as towns similar to Pilsen as Patras, Cork, Genoa, Lille, Graz or Salamanca, took pride in holding the title. In 2008, the centres of culture lovers’ attention were Liverpool and Stavanger, Norway, from where the title will be transferred to Vilnius and Linz in January this year. Košice that won the competition among other eight Slovak candidates (e.g. Bratislava, Nitra, Banská Bystrica) will become European Capital of Culture in 2013.
How can the title European Capital of Culture be won?
Applications in the project European Capital of Culture for the year 2015 will be submitted during the first half of 2009. A two-round national competition will take place after this deadline, evaluated by a selection commission, and, in late summer 2010, the EU Council of Ministers will appoint one Czech and one Belgian town officially to become the “European Capitals of Culture 2015”. We believe that Pilsen will be the one from our country..
