The J Award is a new annual Australian music award from triple j. There is only one category and only one winner - Australian Album of the Year.
Since it began, triple j has been part of the living history of Australian music. For more than 30 years, triple j has been the first to broadcast Australian music to the nation, leading the way for other radio stations. Not surprisingly, the words 'triple j' were used repeatedly in the thank you speeches throughout the ARIAS this year. An Australian album of the year award such as this, could not be given out by any other station.
Who's eligible?
Any Australian album released independently or through a record company, or sent to triple j in consideration for airplay, is eligible for the J Award. The 2005 nominations were selected from albums received by triple j between December 2004 and November 2005.
The criteria:
The J Award is for an album of outstanding achievement as an Australian musical work of art - for its creativity, innovation, musicianship and contribution to Australian music. Fifteen nominations were announced throughout the year.
The J Award judging panel is headed by triple j's Music Director Richard Kingsmill. The panel includes Robbie Buck from triple j's flagship Australian music program Home and Hosed, and other triple j presenters, producers and live music engineers.
The announcement:
The winner of the inaugural J Award will be announced live to air around Australia on Friday 2 December from 3pm on triple j. Tune in to Chris Taylor and Craig Reucassel during Today Today for the full radio ceremony as they cross live to The Annandale Hotel for the official announcement.
The announcement of the J Award winner will come each year at the culmination of Ausmusic Month, when triple j celebrates Australian music throughout November.
Winner of the 2005 J Award:
