Community Development Advocates of Detroit (CDAD)

The Community Development Advocates of Detroit is a citywide coalition of community based, community development organizations and supporters who share a common commitment to community based sustainable development, which is grounded in grass roots participation and empowerment.

Detroit Community Development Corporations (CDCs)

Detroit is home to a number of Community Development Corporations. These corporations are formed by residents, small business owners, congregations and other local stakeholders to produce affordable housing and create jobs for community residents through small or micro business lending, commercial development projects, or providing various social services. Here you will find a listing of Detroit’s leading Community Development Corporations and their contact information to discover what they can do for you.

Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)

The Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) is a non-profit organization and “fiscal intermediary” providing capital to communities that otherwise may not have access to it. LISC invests low and zero interest loans, grants and technical expertise to support the local leadership tackling neighborhood revitalization and quality of life issues within the city of Detroit and recently extending across city boundaries. Some of these include: housing needs, homeownership development, commercial and retail, education, transportation, safety, parks and greenspaces, improved public services, and economic investment.

Detroit is one of 33 LISC locations, and one of 10 cities where National LISC is concentrating its efforts to build sustainable communities nationwide. As the largest national community development intermediary, LISC combines corporate, government and philanthropic resources to help community-based groups revitalize their neighborhoods. Since 1980, LISC has raised over $7.8B to build or rehabilitate more than 215,000 affordable homes and develop 30 million square feet of retail, community and educational space.

LISC has been in Detroit for 17 years, and during that time has invested $104 million in the City's neighborhoods and has worked with over 30 nonprofit organizations as they work to rebuild their neighborhoods. That investment in both financial and human capital has leveraged over $650 million that has resulted in over 3,200 affordable homes and nearly 570,000 square feet of commercial and community space. Detroit LISC’s strategy goes beyond housing to create vibrant healthy neighborhoods, and acknowledges that creating a healthier and more economically viable Detroit is tied to regional cooperation.

The DEGC works in partnership with LISC and the community organizations that are helping the neighborhoods of the city of Detroit to grow and prosper.

Detroit's Neighborhood Cluster Developments

Based on efforts to improve and strengthen Detroit’s neighborhoods, Mayor Kilpatrick has embraced a localized group approach to planning and development. The city is divided into 10 geographic areas that have each been assigned a team whose members convene to identify and best address their respective needs. The clusters teams are responsible for facilitating the exchange of information between community residents and all other stakeholders. This strategy is an active effort to promote and solidify the “Grow Detroit” initiative.
