A Daily Radio Short-Form Feature

I love that song ... but what was the story behind it?
And what's the story behind the star who made it famous?
Why do these hits touch my heart ... stir my soul ...
make me want to dance, romance and fall in love?
And whatever happened to my favorites of yesterday?

Gary Theroux broke into radio as an announcer at the age of 11. Soon after he began conducting artist interviews and building what has become an immense music archive, containing bios, photos, reviews, interviews, clippings and more on just about every pop, rock, country or R&B hitmaker from today on back to 1877 (when Edison invented the phonograph). Also filed away: more than a half-million audio recordings (CDs, LPs, 45s, 78s and yes, even a few Edison cylinders!).

That archive has helped Gary write countless album notes, magazine articles and books — from The Top Ten to The Famous Music Professional Song Guide. He taught music at UCLA and has created and/or written and/or co-produced a lengthy string of award-winning radio and TV specials and series for CBS, PBS, Disney and others. Among them: Remembering The '70s, Elvis, Legends Of Comedy, America In The '40s, An Old-Fashioned Christmas and the epic 52-hour History Of Rock 'n' Roll.

As Music Editor of Reader's Digest, Theroux has produced and annotated more than 200 multi-disc box sets of all kinds of music, from country to classical, doo-wop to disco, big bands to rock 'n' roll. Among them: the definitive career retrospectives of The Beach Boys, Neil Diamond, The Platters, Glenn Miller, Rick Nelson, The Carpenters, Kenny Rogers, The Mamas & The Papas, Nat "King" Cole, Willie Nelson, Peter, Paul & Mary, John Denver, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley and many other stars. Multi-artist box sets include everything from Rock 'n' Roll Legends to Kings Of Country ... 20 Years Of #1 Hits to 100 Favorites Of The '50s ... Dedicated To The One I Love (his latest) to Christmas Through The Years (Reader's Digest all-time best-selling album ever, with sales now approaching five million copies!).
You have undoubtedly seen or heard Gary many times on film, radio or TV as an actor or commercial spokesman for Viacom, Volkswagen, Regina vacuums, Ricola cough drops, Monsanto, Blue Cross-Blue Shield and other clients.
