Muslim
Public Affairs Committee
is a non-profit making organisation working with the community,
helping the Muslims to help themselves.
We
are not a charity but a unique Empowerment System; the first
of its kind for the Muslims in Europe and it is our aim
to defend Muslim interests and Islam throughout Britain
and the world.
The
Muslim population constitutes the largest minority population
in Britain, yet we are the most under represented in the
political process.
More than ever, we see that the needs and the opinions of
the Muslims are being disregarded.
How
many times are Muslims made to feel as if Britain has done
them a great favour by allowing them to live and work here -
when many Muslims in Britain today were born here, and many
others have reverted to Islam, either way we are British
citizens and we live and work and bring revenue in and pay taxes. Muslims are law-abiding citizens and as such
have a right to be heard, a right to be listened to and
a right to be taken seriously.
It
is the aim of MPAC to change the situation for Muslims
in Britain and throughout the rest of the world.
For too long have we been left behind in the race for both
political and media attention towards the difficulties faced
by the Muslims. What has been done to bring these issues to
the forefront?
Originally
set up as a web-based media monitoring group, MPAC's first
mission was to fight the bias in the media and to re-dress
the balance. MPAC has since flourished. Rather than being
a concentrated group of activists, funded by the community,
MPAC aims to give the power to the community. A system of
media monitoring, political lobbying and grass-roots community
and institutional activism to allow the individual and the
community the ability to change their own situation and
the situation for Muslims at large. MPAC has been and still
is forging links with the media to open an avenue for rational
dialogue and re-education of the individual on the street
regarding Islam and Muslims. The aim is make the all-too-common
misrepresentation of Islam a thing of the past.
MPAC is aiming to politicise the Muslims and encourage them
to get to know their Member of Parliament, and to feel
confident in raising issues with them - it is after all
their job to look after the interests of their constituents.
MPAC is aiming to bring the community together, disunity
among Muslims has been our biggest downfall in recent years.
MPAC is working with many organisations in its aim to break
down barriers to enable us to pool and harness the
considerable resources at our disposal as a community.
This
is not a knee-jerk reaction to recent developments but it
is a life long commitment to ensuring the future of Muslims.
