A synchrotron model for the continuum spectrum of the Crab Nebula
Abstract
This paper presents a simple model for the synchrotron radiation from the Crab Nebula which includes the effects of magnetodynamic activity. By allowing for the energy gain of the relativistic electrons which are temporarily in regions of enhanced field, it is possible to explain the complete spectrum from radio to X-ray frequencies without requiring the continuous injection of electrons of very high energies. The energy requirements for the model are similar to the usual synchrotron model, but the spectrum of the electrons injected from near the pulsar is much simpler.
