Beach arrangement
Breakfast in the assortment did not correspond to the 5-star hotel. It's the only one, but it's a big drawback.

The breakfast was very good, and the rooms are nice and spacious
After the check-out the luggage is stored in the luggage room and is delivered to guests outside the hotel (in front of the main entrance). So if you need to pack something just before your transfer to the airport you will do it in front of the hotel.

The room was spectacular; a beautiful suite with classic furniture, flat- screen TVs, and a large balcony with table and chairs that looked out onto a phenomenal view of the ocean. The twin basins in the ample-sized en-suite bathroom fit in quite nicely with the eloquent design of the bathroom. The main entrance to the hotel is down a slope, which is far enough from the main road to allow hotel guests to relax away from the sound of nearby traffic, but near enough for guests to catch a bus or a taxi or even walk to Funchal marina. The staff were all friendly and very helpful. I recommend sitting by the garden for breakfast and walking down to the pool area to savour the beautiful views of the mountains and ocean that encompass Funchal.
The breakfast buffet catered for tourists so it was just a generic international buffet, which lacked in good quality Portuguese produce. I think one of the few Portuguese products I saw was the butter. The ham looked as though it had come straight out of a packet from a supermarket rather than being hand-picked from a butcher's shop, which is what you would expect from a Portuguese 5* hotel. I don't recall seeing any pão caseiro (traditional home baked bread) or anything typically Madeiran like bolo de caco, which again is a real shame. The eggs were cooked in advance and left to sit on the slab when they should have been cooked there and then as requested by the hotel guests. The breakfast buffet lets down this hotel.

Superb location within walking distance of excellent restaurants. Beautiful views from the room and balcony across to Funchal harbour. Bright and airy, much less stuffy than the more famous Reid's hotel next door. Well-appointed room with plenty of space. Free wi-fi. Plenty of free car-parking (hire car essential to do the island justice). Excellent buffet breakfast.
Pretentious Michelin-starred "gourmet" restaurant (Euros 135 per head). Receiving an unsolicited time-share pitch from the hotel was unwelcome.
