Key Themes of Surah Al Mulk

Surah Al-Mulk is like a journey through three important ideas:

  • First (Verses 1-5): We learn about Allah’s nature, especially His power and sovereignty. It’s like understanding that He is the King of everything and has control over all things.
  • Second (Verses 6-19): We explore the amazing creation of the universe. This part is like looking up at the sky and realising how perfectly everything is made.
  • Third (Verses 20-30): We’re reminded about the Day of Judgement. This part makes us think about what will happen after we die and the importance of living a good life.

Each of these parts of Sourah Al Mulk has a special message, encouraging us to think about how great Allah is and what our purpose is in life. It’s like this Surah is a reminder that we’re not just here by chance, but there’s a reason for our existence.

An authentic hadith tells us that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk every night before sleeping.

This practice alone highlights the importance of Sura Al-Mulk. If the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who received revelation directly from Allah, made it a point to recite this Surah before going to sleep, then it must hold great significance for all believers.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also said, “Whoever recites Al-Mulk is as if he has recited one-third of the Quran.”

Understanding the Meaning:

“No individual can impose his will on another and Allah Almighty is the master of the whole universe and He has control over everything.”

Greatness of Allah in Al-Mulk Surah (1-5):

The starting section of Surah Mulk is like a grand introduction to the might of Allah Almighty. It really emphasizes His total control over everything. This Sura seems to be crafted to evoke a deep sense of awe and maybe even a bit of fear in a believer, constantly reminding them of how powerful Allah is.

Right from the first verse, you get that feeling:

{❁} تَبَـٰرَكَ ٱلَّذِى بِيَدِهِ ٱلْمُلْكُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌ

It’s a powerful statement about Allah’s blessings and His glory. This ayah tells us that all the goodness and mercy in existence come directly from Him. The fact that He holds “Al-Mulk” – dominion over everything – is mind-blowing. Imagine, from the smallest ant crawling on the earth to the biggest star shining in the sky, it’s all under His command. And then you have that impactful verse:

“He is the One Who created Death and Life” (67:2).

The water – we need it to survive, and if someone tried to stop us from getting it, only Allah could provide it again. It’s a simple example, but it really hammers home how much we rely on Him, how everything is ultimately in His control.

Some scholar explain the word “kun,” meaning “be,” and how it showcases Allah’s ultimate power. When He says “kun,”  whatever He wants just comes into existence. He doesn’t need to plan, gather materials, or use any tools – He just wills it, and it happens.

So, Surah Mulk compels us to truly appreciate the magnificence of Allah, the only One deserving of our worship. He’s not just “our” Allah, He’s the Lord of absolutely everything in the universe. It’s a realization that should make us feel both humbled and completely in awe.

The Perfection of Creation (6-19):

Al Mulk Surah beautifully showcases the boundless power of Allah. It’s like this Surat wants to fill you up with the realization of just how mighty Allah (SAW) truly is. And what better way to do that than to point you towards the sky? It as a prime example of His perfect creation. When you look up and see that vast, flawless expanse, you can’t help but think about the One who made it.

At that point: if something as magnificent and perfect as the sky exists, then imagine how perfect Allah is, His names, His attributes, His words, His actions – everything about Him is perfect, without a single flaw or imperfection. It’s a reminder that He has complete control over everything.

Are you absolutely certain that Allah won’t shake things up right now, right where you are, with a powerful earthquake? Allah is the one who provides for all beings, from the birds soaring in the sky to the tiny bees buzzing around. (verse 67:19)

And then comes the question: Who will provide for you? Will it be an army? Another god? Your own efforts? How will you manage to save yourselves? These questions are designed to make us think about how much we depend on Allah for everything. They remind us that true reliance can only be placed in Allah, the One who holds absolute power over all things.

Consequences of Disbelief (20-30):

Mulk surah emphasizes that life and death are a test for all humans, regardless of their beliefs. This concept is central to Islamic teachings, encouraging believers to live with a sense of responsibility and purpose. The challenges we encounter provide opportunities to strengthen our faith and perform good deeds, with the ultimate aim of seeking Allah’s pleasure. The verse:

{❁} وَلِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِرَبِّهِمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ

Serves as a reminder of the consequences of disbelief. The verses in Surah Mulk also encourage us to reflect on the wonders of nature, particularly the sky, as a testament to Allah’s existence. The powerful language used invites believers to try and find any imperfection in the heavens. The inability to find flaws in Allah’s creation showcases the beauty and perfection of His design and highlights His immense power.

The final outcome for those who disbelieve and disregard Allah’s signs is a grim one. The verses paint a stark and powerful image of the punishment awaiting them in the afterlife, serving as a powerful reminder of the severe consequences of rejecting the truth.

This warning, however, is accompanied by a promise of reward for those who choose to believe and follow Allah’s guidance, underscoring the importance of faith and righteous actions.

This section focuses on the consequences of disbelief and what awaits us after death. It describes the fate of non-believers who will face severe punishments in the hereafter. The vivid imagery presented acts as a stark warning, urging individuals to reassess any deviation from faith and seek closeness to Allah.

Sur-e-Mulk highlights the intense regret and sorrow experienced by those who disbelieve on the Day of Judgement. They will acknowledge their errors and finally accept the truth they once rejected. However, this realization comes too late, when there’s no chance to make amends or seek forgiveness.

This serves as a powerful wake-up call for believers, reminding them to hold fast to the truth and live a life that pleases Allah. Verses 10-11 of Surah Al-Mulk,

Describe the remorse and sorrow of those who disbelieve on the Day of Judgement. Those who rejected Allah’s message will confess their sins and wish they had listened and obeyed. They will admit that if they had followed the guidance, they wouldn’t be suffering the torment of Hell. But by then, it will be too late, and their regrets will be of no use.

That why Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “If you knew what I know, you would not find pleasure in sleeping with your wives.”

“If you knew what I know, you would not bury your dead.”

“If you knew what I would know, you would cry more and laugh less.”

The Purpose of Our Life In Surat Mulk:

Our life have a clear purpose: Allah created both death and life. Before we existed, we were nothing, lifeless. In the Quran-e-Kareem, Allah questions how we can disbelieve in Him when He gave us life from a state of death.

Before we came into this world (Dunya), we were in a state of non-being, a void that was brought into existence by Allah. Some scholars suggest we go through four stages of death. We start with non-existence, then Allah creates us and gives us life. After that, we experience death, as confirmed by (ٱلَّذِیْ خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ). The second verse of Surah Al-Mulk says:

(❁) ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَٱلْحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًۭا ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْغَفُورُ

This translates to: “He created death and life to test you, which of you is best in deed—and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.”

Let’s explore these meanings further. First of all, The verse starts by stating الَّذِیْ خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَیٰوةَ which means Allah is the creator of both death and life.

Everything in the Quran has a purpose and meaning, and there’s always wisdom (hikmah) behind it. Why mention death before life? It might seem counterintuitive, but the point is to emphasize that Allah created both – death and life.

Our existence follows a pattern: death, life, death, and then an eternal life – either in hellfire or paradise. We’re at a crossroads, and the choice is ours to make. you have a choice: you can choose to follow the Prophet’s guidance and embrace Islam, or you can follow a path of your own choosing.

You may find success and comfort in this world, but eventually, you will die. On the Day of Judgement, you will be held accountable for your actions and will face an eternal fate – either in hellfire or in paradise.

Benefits Of Surah al Mulk Full:

Only 30 verses of one particular surah that is in the Quran Kareem continue to beg Allah’s forgiveness until Allah forgives, and that is nothing but just a surah, called Surah Tabarak

It is one of the most important surahs in the Quran because the surah focuses on seeking forgiveness from Allah through one important means, and that is to demonstrate the power and magnificence of Allah.

Protection in the Grave:

Reciting Surah Mulk every night before going to bed is said to offer protection from the torment of the grave. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said in an authentic hadith,

“Surah Al-Mulk is the protector from the punishment of the grave.”

This hadith emphasizes the protective quality of Surah e Mulk, offering comfort and a sense of security to those who make it a part of their nightly routine.

Forgiveness and Intercession:

Inshallah on the Day of Judgement, Surah Al-Mulk will intercede on behalf of those who recited it, seeking Allah’s forgiveness for them until they are forgiven and granted entry into Paradise (Jannah). However, this intercession is only possible with Allah’s permission.

This is supported by a hadith narrated by the Prophet ﷺ:

“There is a surah in the Qur’an of thirty verses, which intercedes for a reciter until he is forgiven. It is Sura Tabarak Alladhi Biyadihil Mulk.”

Another hadith states that on the Day of Judgement, Surahal Mulk will appear as a shade and plead to Allah:

‘O Allah! I prevented my reciter from disobeying You in the world, so accept my intercession for him today.”

This highlights the powerful role of Surah Mulk in seeking forgiveness and protection for those who recite it.

So, there is an important point, I want to share with you, In Ayatul Kursi; Allah says,

“مَن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ”

Which means, “Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission?”

So, the key takeaway is that reciting Surah e Mulk every night can help a person gain entry into Jannah, but it’s important to remember that this is only possible with Allah’s permission. When reciting Al Mulk with sincere belief, one can have faith that it will intercede for their sins to be forgiven, leading them to Jannah on the Day of Judgement. The message of Surat Al Mulk, therefore, emphasizes that this world (Dunya) is temporary for believers, while the real and everlasting world is Jannah.

Tafseer Of Surah Mulk: Introduction

Allah Almighty started the Sorah by saying, ﷽ as always, he starts all the chapters with this wonderful starting, which means,

“In the name of Allah, the most compassion, the most merciful”

Then Allah Almighty saids, تَبٰرَكَ الَّذِیْ بِیَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ٘- وَهُوَعَلٰى كُلِّ شَیْءٍ قَدِیْرُ, which means [Blessed is he in whose hand is dominion, and he is over all thing competent], he can do everything and anything. So, what it means is that when it started the Sura by saying:

Blessed is he, he is starring by blessing himself and glorifying himself and saying that all the barakah, all the blessing, all the mercy it comes from Allah Almighty.

He is also starting by glorifying himself by letting us know that he is the complete, he is the only one, he is the one who blesses other people, the blessings come from him, he is the source of the blessings, he is the source of barakah, and he is the one who gives all these barakah to everyone, and he is trying to tell us بِيَدِهِ ٱلْمُلْكُ in his hand the dominion of everything.

Imagine ٱلْمُلْكُ and also in other verses from the Quran, he says مَـٰلِكَ ٱلْمُلْكِ that he is the owner and dominion of all the entire world, everything in the whole universe; he can control it; he does everything in it. So, just imagine that he is controlling everything, everything literally; he is blessings; he is giving life; he is blessing and showing his mercy to the people and everything; he is the lord of everything; he is the one who created the whole human being.

He is taking control of everything; he is taking control of the heavens, the skies and the earth, he is taking care of the sun and the moon, he is taking care of clouds and the rain and the wind, and every single thing is happening in this world. He is taken care of بِيَدِهِ ٱلْمُلْكُ, he is controlling over everything, and not only that, وَهُوَعَلٰى كُلِّ شَیْءٍ قَدِیْرُ, he is able and capable to do anything and everything.

By understanding this historical backdrop, the teachings of The Sovereignty come alive for us today. It’s like drawing a parallel between their resilience and the challenges we face in our modern lives. We can learn valuable lessons from their unwavering faith and apply those lessons to our own situations.

Concept of Divine Justice In Surah Mulk:

One of the striking aspects of this sura is its portrayal of divine justice, particularly through vivid descriptions of hellfire. This serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of disobedience and encourages believers to seriously consider their actions and strive for righteousness.

However, It doesn’t just focus on punishment. It also invites us to contemplate the balance between Allah’s justice and His boundless mercy. This encourages us to:

  • Develop a stronger moral compass: When we understand that our actions have consequences, both in this life and the next, we are more likely to make ethical choices and live with integrity.
  • Embrace personal accountability: Recognising the link between our choices and their outcomes fosters a sense of responsibility for our actions. We become more aware of the impact we have on ourselves and others.
  • By engaging with the theme of justice and mercy in Al-Mulk surat, we can develop a deeper understanding of Allah’s attributes and cultivate a more balanced and fulfilling spiritual life

Finding Balance between Mercy and Awe:

It’s a sad reality that not everyone seeks the path of righteousness. Sometimes, people make choices that lead to difficult consequences for themselves and those around them. Nobody wants to find themselves in such a situation.

Al Mulk offers a beautiful balance between Allah’s compassion and the fear of His judgment. It teaches believers to embrace both aspects of their relationship with Allah: love and awe.

Think of it like this: Love for Allah inspires us to do good and seek His pleasure, while the fear of His judgment keeps us from straying from the right path. Both are essential for building a strong spiritual foundation.
