Change Battery preferences on a Mac notebook
Use Battery System Preferences to set options that control your Mac notebook computer’s battery and energy use. How you set these options can help you optimize the lifespan of your battery.
Note: Some of the options may not be available, depending on your Mac.
To open these preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Battery , then click Battery again.
Option | Description |
---|---|
Turn display off after | Set the amount of time your computer or display should wait before going to sleep while on battery power. |
Put hard disks to sleep when possible | Put the hard drive to sleep whenever the computer is inactive. |
Slightly dim the display while on battery power | Reduce the brightness of the display while on battery power. |
Enable Power Nap while on battery power | Have your Mac check for email, calendar, and other iCloud updates while sleeping on battery power. |
Automatic graphics switching | To optimize the lifespan of your battery, have your Mac automatically choose the best graphics mode based on your usage. |
Optimize video streaming while on battery | While on battery power, play high-dynamic-range (HDR) video in standard dynamic range (SDR), which requires less energy. See the Apple Support article Play HDR video on Mac. |
Optimized battery charging | To reduce battery aging, have your Mac learn from your daily charging routine. Then your Mac can wait to charge past 80% until you need to use it. |
Show battery status in menu bar | See the battery’s charge level in the menu bar. |
Low power mode | Reduce energy usage to increase battery life. |
Energy Mode | Choose which energy mode you want your Mac to use.
