Use Live Captions with a braille display on Mac
If you use a braille display with VoiceOver, you can use it with Live Captions to get real-time captioning of spoken audio — allowing you to easily follow the audio in any app, such as FaceTime or Podcasts, and in live conversations around you. Audio is processed on your Mac.
Note: Live Captions is available only on Mac computers with Apple silicon and is not available in all languages, countries or regions. The accuracy of Live Captions may vary and should not be relied upon in high-risk or emergency situations.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, then click Live Captions. (You may need to scroll down.)
Turn on Live Captions.
When VoiceOver is on, press VO-Fn-F1-F1 to open the Application Chooser.
Note: VO represents the VoiceOver modifier that you press with additional keys to enter VoiceOver commands. By default, you can press Control and Option together or just press Caps Lock.
Press the Down Arrow or Up Arrow key to navigate to System Dialogues in the menu, then press the Space bar.
Press the Down Arrow or Up Arrow key to navigate to Live Captions in the menu, then press the Space bar. Real-time captioning is outputted to the braille display you use with VoiceOver.
With Live Captions, you can switch between captioning the audio coming out of your Mac and the sound picked up by the computer’s microphone (such as during an in-person conversation). You can also have what you type spoken aloud. See Get live captions of spoken audio.
