Change settings in Books on Mac
In the Books app on your Mac, use settings to set default options for using Books.
To change these settings, choose Books > Settings, then click General, Reading, Playback, or Advanced.
General settings
Option | Description |
---|---|
Download new purchases automatically | Automatically download new purchases (including free ones) made on other devices. The same Apple ID must be used in Apple Books on all your devices. |
Reading Now | Sync information about what books and audiobooks you’re reading across your Apple devices. |
Collections, bookmarks, and highlights | Sync collections, bookmarks, highlights, and recent book information across your Apple devices. |
Enable Reading Goals | View time spent reading and other achievements. |
Clear Reading Goals Data | Clear data about your time spent reading and reading streaks. |
Reading settings
Option | Description |
---|---|
Full Justification | Read books with text aligned on both the left and right. The words are spaced to fit the columns. This option is not available for larger font sizes. |
Auto-hyphenation | Automatically hyphenate words that are too long to fit on one line. When this option is not selected, words may have large spaces between them. |
Extend by 10 minutes while reading | Extend the time before the display sleeps by 10 minutes while reading. |
Playback settings
Option | Description |

Skip Forward | Choose the number of seconds to skip forward when you click the skip button. |
Skip Back | Choose the number of seconds to skip back when you click the skip button. |
Headphone Controls | Select what happens when you use headphone controls (for example, double-tapping either of your AirPods).

Advanced settings
Option | Description |
---|---|
Include store results when searching | Include results from the Book and Audiobook Stores when searching. |
Reset Access to Online Content | Clear permission for books to access publisher’s content from the Internet. |
Reset Identifier | Reset the identifier used to report aggregate app usage statistics to Apple. |
