Add links in Notes on Mac
You can add links to your notes, then use them to quickly access webpages, other notes, or content in other apps.
Note: All Notes features described in this guide are available when using iCloud notes. Some features aren’t available when using accounts from other providers.
Link to a webpage
Go to the Notes app on your Mac.
Open a note, or click to create a new note.
Do one of the following:
Choose Edit > Add Link, type or paste the webpage’s URL, then click OK.
Type or paste the webpage’s URL, then press the Space bar or the Return key.
If the URL does not automatically become a link, choose Edit > Substitutions > Smart Links to turn on Smart Links (a checkmark shows it’s on).
Tip: To change some text that’s already in the note into a link, select the text, press Command-K, then type or paste the webpage’s URL.
Link to another note
You can add a link to connect related notes. For example, you can link a trip itinerary to a list of recommended restaurants.
Note: Notes that contain links to other notes may not be visible on devices with previous versions of macOS. See Why notes are hidden on some devices.
Go to the Notes app on your Mac.
Open a note, or click to create a new note.
Choose Edit > Add Link, then type the name of a note you want to link. As you type, a list of matching notes appears.
Optionally, select Use Note Title to make the link text match the current title of the linked note, or deselect the checkbox to enter different text for the link.
Click OK.
Tip: To quickly add a link to another note, type >> to have a list of your notes appear. Begin typing to narrow your results, then select the note you want to link to. When you use this shortcut, the link title always matches the current title of the linked note.
Link to an app
You can add a link to content in supported apps, like a webpage in Safari or an episode in Podcasts.
Go to the Notes app on your Mac.
Make sure the app you want to link to is open and active.
Open a note, or click to create a new note.
Click in the toolbar, then choose Add Link.
If you add a link to a Quick Note, a thumbnail of the Quick Note appears in the corner of the screen when you return to the linked content in the app.
Edit and remove links
After you’ve added links to a note, you can edit or remove them.
Go to the Notes app on your Mac.
Open the note with the link you want to change.
Control-click the link, then choose one of the following:
Edit Link
Remove Link
Change the color of links
You can change the color of links and highlights by changing the accent color and highlight color in Appearance settings on your Mac. (Changes you make there apply to links and highlights in all apps.) See Change Appearance settings.
