Change preferences in Books on Mac
In the Books app on your Mac, use preferences to set default options for using Books.
To change these preferences, choose Books > Preferences, then click General, Store or Advanced.
General preferences
Option | Description |
---|---|
When reading EPUB Books | Select “Let lines break naturally” to read EPUB books with text aligned on the left. Select “Justify text (space words to fit columns)” to read EPUB books with text aligned on both the left and right. |
Auto-hyphenate words | Select to automatically hyphenate words that are too long to fit on one line. When not selected, words may have large spaces between them. |
Display Sleep | Select to extend the time before the display sleeps by 10 minutes while reading. |
Sync | Select to keep collections, bookmarks and highlights updated across devices. |
Reset all dialogue warnings | Click Reset Warnings to resume seeing relevant warnings, even after selecting the tickbox to not see them again. |
Store preferences
Option | Description |
---|---|
Download new purchases automatically | Select to automatically download new purchases. Apple Books can automatically download new purchases made on other devices as well. The same Apple ID must be used in Apple Books on all your devices. |
Purchases | Select Always Require to require a password for every purchase. Select Require After 15 Minutes to not require a password if you entered your password within the last 15 minutes. |
Free Downloads | Select Require Password to require a password for free downloads. Select Save Password to automatically use a saved password for free downloads. |
Advanced preferences

Enable Advanced menu in menu bar | Select to add the Advanced menu to the menu bar along the top of your screen. You can use this menu to add EPUB books to your library as proofs. |
