Change Energy Saver preferences on a Mac desktop computer
Use Energy Saver System Preferences to set options that control your Mac desktop computer’s energy use.
As an ENERGY STAR® partner, Apple has determined that standard configurations of your Mac meet the ENERGY STAR® guidelines for energy efficiency.

Note: Some of the options may not be available, depending on your Mac.
To open the pane, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Energy Saver .

Option | Description |
---|---|
Power and UPS panes | Click either the Power pane or the UPS pane, then select energy-saving options for that power source. Your Mac uses those options when it’s getting power from that source. You see the UPS button only if your Mac is connected to an uninterruptible power source. |
Schedule pane | Set a daily schedule for putting your Mac to sleep or turning it off and on. See Schedule your Mac desktop computer to turn on or off. |
Turn display off after | Set the amount of time your Mac should wait before going to sleep. |
Prevent your Mac from sleeping automatically when the display is off | Keep your Mac from going to sleep when the display sleeps. |
Put hard disks to sleep when possible | Put the hard drive to sleep whenever the computer is inactive. |
Wake for network access | Even in sleep mode, wake your Mac to provide access to shared resources, such as shared printers or Music playlists. |
Start up automatically after a power failure | Start up your Mac after a power interruption. |
Enable Power Nap | Have your Mac check for email, calendar, and other iCloud updates while sleeping on battery power. |
Slightly dim the display when using this power source | Reduce the brightness of the display while plugged into a UPS. |
Show UPS status in menu bar | See the UPS’s charge level in the menu bar. |
Shutdown Options | Set the time or battery level at which your Mac shuts down when using a UPS. See Set when your Mac shuts down while using a UPS. |
Restore Defaults | Restore all your preferences to the default options. |
