Connect to the Internet using PPPoE in AirPort Utility on Mac
Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) is one type of protocol used to connect to your ISP.
When you use AirPort Utility Setup Assistant to set up your new base station or extend an existing network, it automatically configures the best settings for your network. It’s recommended that you manually configure your base station’s settings only if instructed to do so by your ISP or network administrator.
That said, if your ISP gave you an account name, password and other information for your PPPoE account, you can manually configure your base station to connect to the Internet using PPPoE.
If you’re using a DSL or cable modem, make sure it’s connected to the telephone or cable jack and to the base station’s wide area network (WAN) port
.Open the AirPort Utility app
on your Mac, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. In the graphical overview, select the base station you want to configure, then click Edit. You may need to enter a password for the base station.
Click Internet, click the Connect Using pop-up menu, then choose PPPoE.
Enter the account name, password and any other information your ISP gave you (for example, the service name).
Important: Don’t modify the DNS Servers, IPv6 DNS Servers or Domain Name fields unless you’re instructed to do so by your ISP or network administrator.
Optionally configure the PPPoE connection type by clicking the Internet Options button near the bottom of the pane, then choosing an option from the PPPoE Connection pop-up menu:
Always On: Choose Always On if you want your base station to stay connected to your modem and the Internet as long as the modem is turned on.
Automatic: Choose Automatic if you want your base station to connect to your modem and the Internet when you use an app that requires an Internet connection, such as an email, instant message or web app.
Manual: Choose Manual if you want to control when your modem connects to the Internet.
If you chose an Automatic or Manual PPPoE connection and want your base station to automatically disconnect if it’s not being used, choose an increment of time, such as 10 minutes, from the PPPoE Disconnect if Idle pop-up menu.
Important: Don’t modify the dynamic global hostname information unless you’re instructed to do so by your ISP or network administrator.
Click Save to save your changes and close the dialogue, then click Update to save the changes.
