Use the Archive mailbox
You can store messages in an Archive mailbox—for example, to quickly find them later when you’re ready to take action.
Note: To archive a message from a Mail notification or from the message list with a swipe, the “Move discarded messages” option in Viewing preferences in Mail must be set to Archive; otherwise, the message is deleted.
Archive a message from a Mail notification: Move the pointer over the notification, then click Archive.
Archive a message from the message list: Select the message, then click the Archive button in the Mail toolbar (or use the Touch Bar). You can also swipe the message left with two fingers, then click Archive, or swipe all the way to the left until the message disappears.
Archive multiple messages from the message list: Select one or more messages, then choose Message > Archive or click the Archive button.
View archived messages: When you archive messages, Mail creates an archive mailbox in the Mail sidebar for each account whose messages you’re archiving, and moves the messages you selected there. Click an Archive mailbox to see the messages.
If you select a conversation to archive, any message in the conversation that’s in the current mailbox—for example, the Inbox—is archived; related messages that are in other mailboxes are not archived.
Archived messages remain in the Archive mailbox until you delete or move them.
