Connect your device to your Mac to sync Music content
If you connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to your Mac, you can transfer and update items between your Mac and your device.
Connect your device
Connect your device to your Mac using a USB or USB-C cable.
Do one of the following:
If it’s your first time connecting this device to your Mac: Open the Finder on your Mac, click the device in the Finder sidebar, then click Trust; you may also need to tap Trust on the device.
If it’s not your first time connecting this device to your Mac: In the Music app on your Mac, click the device in the sidebar, then click Sync Settings in the top-right corner.
The device opens in the Finder on your Mac.
If your device doesn’t connect, see If your device doesn’t appear in the sidebar when connected to Mac.
Select items to sync automatically
Click Sync Settings in the top-right corner, then choose one of the following:
Fill your device with a random selection of songs using Autofill
If you get tired of hearing the same music on your device, you can have Music fill it with a random selection of songs using Autofill.
In the Finder on your Mac, select the device in the Finder sidebar.
Click General in the button bar, then do the following:
Turn off automatic syncing: Make sure “Automatically sync when this [device] is connected” is unselected.
Turn on Autofill: Make sure “Manually manage music, movies, and TV shows” is selected.
In the Music app on your Mac, click the Autofill From pop-up menu at the bottom of the Music pane, then choose the songs you want to sync.
Click Settings, then do any of the following to adjust Autofill settings:
Replace all music on your device: Select “Replace all items when Autofilling.”
If you deselect the option, your current music is saved and Autofill fills the rest of your device with new songs.
Randomly choose songs to add: Select “Choose items randomly.” If you want items with higher ratings chosen more often than those with lower ratings, also select “Choose higher rated items more often.”
Each time you use Autofill, Music adds different songs to your device.
If you deselect “Choose items randomly,” songs are added in the order in which they appear in your library or selected playlist.
Select how much disk space to reserve: Drag the slider to adjust.
For more details, see Autofill settings.
When you’re done, click OK.
Click Autofill, then click Sync.
To remove a song that was added using Autofill, select it, press the Delete key, then click Delete Song. See Delete songs and other items.
Important: Before disconnecting your device from your computer, click the Eject button in Apple Music or in the Finder.
