Challenge

Since 2015, Atlassian has acquired several companies to expand its suite of offerings to plan projects, resolve incidents and deploy products. But while Atlassian wanted to build its own billing solution to create a unified purchasing experience across all of their products, they hit a common stumbling block: the project would require allocating engineering resources away from Atlassian’s core products.

“When you serve over 200,000 businesses ranging from 10 to 100,000 employees, building a home-grown billing solution to serve both SMB and enterprise businesses is a massive undertaking,” said Chandra Elango, Head of Go To Market IT at Atlassian. “By partnering with Stripe, we were able to build a scalable purchasing experience for our customers while focusing our engineering resources on bringing our product innovations to our customers faster.”

Solution

Atlassian chose Stripe because of its flexible billing solution and deeply collaborative approach to enterprise partnerships which would enable Atlassian to consolidate its payments and billing systems into a single, easy-to-use architecture. In scoping out the partnership, Stripe and Atlassian worked closely together to design over a dozen custom features to help Atlassian increase its revenue as its enterprise product suite expands.

“By leveraging Stripe, we’re investing in helping Atlassian’s scale for years to come. We’re leaving all things payments to Stripe so our teams remain focused on strengthening our unique sales motion to bring products to markets for our customers,” said Atlassian CIO Archana Rao.

Unlike traditional providers, every aspect of Stripe Billing is built to optimise subscriptions and operations for enterprise billing teams:

Stripe Billing is powered by a machine learning architecture that is constantly learning from over 100,000 businesses on the Billing network. Stripe’s smart retries feature recovers 14% more revenue for their customers than those retrying failed payments on a set schedule.

Stripe Billing also provides teams with unparalleled adaptability and ease of use. Thanks to the flexibility of Stripe’s core subscriptions API, Atlassian can now instantly schedule subscriptions, quickly customise their pricing models and fully automate B2B payment support.

Results

Because Stripe’s infrastructure serves as the connective layer across Atlassian’s subscription offerings, Atlassian can reduce operational costs, leading to further opportunities to maximise revenue.

“The increasing depth of our product suite is making Stripe a powerful revenue multiplier for internet businesses – without them having to lift a finger,” commented Mike Clayville, Chief Revenue Officer at Stripe. “We’re thrilled that Atlassian chose to partner with Stripe to streamline subscriptions across its product offerings.”

With this partnership, Atlassian joins hundreds of enterprises using Stripe today to scale and adapt. Stripe now counts more than 40 category leaders processing more than $1 billion annually as customers.
