Riyadh Stadium – design description
The stadium project was prepared in connection with Saudi Arabia's bid to host the 2027 Asian Cup. The facility was to stand on the northern outskirts of Riyadh, near Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University, on the road leading to the international airport. The stadium was to have a football layout and a capacity of 22,000 spectators.
The facility was to be equipped with mobile stands, allowing the capacity to be adjusted and the size of the playing field to accommodate different events. The main stand, with expanded facilities and a covered auditorium, was to be located on the west side. It was assumed 600 seats in the hospitality areas and 200 in the royal box.
Four floodlight masts were planned for the corners, and two video screens behind the goals. The surroundings of the venue were to include parking lots and four full-size practice fields. The vicinity was to be landscaped with drought-tolerant, naturally occurring vegetation in the region. Access to the stadium was to be possible by subway.
In the area where the stadium was planned, there were even banners with a visualization of the facility, announcing the investment. However, construction did not take place, and in July 2024 a new project was announced, involving the construction of a much larger stadium (King Salman International Stadium) on the same site, which was to become the largest in the country and become the venue for the 2034 World Cup final.
