Anfield – design description
Before Liverpool FC decided to expand Anfield, the club commissioned two separate concepts of new stadiums at Stanley Park, just across the street. Both were eventually dropped for lower value for money than the expansion scheme.
In April 2014 The Reds first presented renderings of the new Main Stand, which should grow by 8,500 seats and reach a stunning 21,000 capacity. It will house most of the club’s hospitality and offices, also becoming home to the Hillsborough Memorial.
Though not presented in initial renders, the scheme also includes expansion of the northern Anfield Stand. Planning application for both phases was filed in June 2014. Reconstruction of the main stand began in 2015 and delivered a massive main stand in late 2016. However, this phase proved significantly more expensive than anticipated, costing £114 million instead of £75m.
In late 2019 Liverpool FC allowed the outline planning permission for new north end lapse. Instead of initial plans of adding 4,800 seats, the club decided to pursue a more ambitious vision that would see 7,000 more seats, giving a total of 61,000.
Work officially began on September 30, 2021, with the rebuilt north end expected to be ready for the 2023/2024 season.
