Credit Cards, Seychelles Rupee, Money & Banks in Seychelles

MasterCard / Access and Visa credit cards are generally accepted, but Diners Club and American Express less so. Credit cards can be used for rental cars, hotels and restaurants. All services are charged and debited in foreign currency. Shops or boutiques that accept credit cards usually display their logo in the window or on the counter.
You will find ATMs in all major banks on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue and at the Airport of Mahé and Praslin. You only pay out cash in local currency; Seychelles Rupee (SCR).

Local Currency & Banks in Seychelles

The local currency is the Seychelles Rupee (SCR), which is divided by 100 cents. There are coins in denominations of 5, 10, 25 cents and 1 and 5 rupees. Banknotes are available in denominations of 10, 25, 50, 100 and 500 rupees.

Exchange rates appear on the Central Bank of Seychelles website and are available at all banks.

The business hours of the banks are generally Monday - Friday 0800-1400 and on Saturdays 0800-1100. All banks process traveller's cheques and foreign exchange transactions. Visitors need their passport and a nominal handling fee may be charged. ATM machines are available at the main banks on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. At these you can obtain cash in the local currency.

Visitors to the islands are now entitled to make payments for services/products in Seychelles Rupees. The decision to pay in any other currency is entirely at the discretion of the visitor. Exchange rates are determined by the market and may vary from bank to bank and the different bureaux de change.

Foreign exchange in the Seychelles

Foreign exchange into the Seychelles Rupee should only be made at banks, authorised money changers or with the hotel and guest house. Visitors should refrain from exchanging money with any person who approaches them in public, as there is a strong possibility that these persons are involved in unauthorised transactions, possibly with counterfeit money.

WARNING! It is a criminal offence to exchange money with any person or business other than those authorized and listed above.

Credit cards are widely accepted in the Seychelles. When purchasing rupees with a credit card, it is advisable to exchange only as much as is needed for daily needs.

Visitors wishing to exchange international currency into Seychelles Rupees should check with the various banks and exchange offices to obtain the best exchange rate.

In order to be able to exchange Seychelles Rupees into international currency on departure, visitors should be able to present an official receipt from an authorised foreign exchange dealer at the bank in question.
