Of course the seven-a-side contest garnered the most attention and great was the enthusiasm when Hawick, led on by Davie Patterson, worsted Langholm by 3 goals to 0, kicked by T. M. Scott, the tries got by Patterson, Sharp and McNee. Langholm were very weakly represented, Tom Scott being an absentee owing to an accident received in a practice game a few days ago.

The second tie between Melrose and Jed-Forest extended beyond the regulation minutes considerably, and when Oliver finally scored for Jed they has ousted a better seven.

In the final Hawick, after extra time, succumbed rather unexpectedly to Jed-Forest, for whom Paton scored.

From The Southern Reporter of 24 September 1896:

Melrose, Langholm, Jed-Forest and Hawick were the competitors in the football contest. Jed-Forest beat Melrose, Hawick beat Langholm and in the final – extra time having to be played – the Forest ran out winners by a try to nothing after a keen contest.

In the first round Hawick met Langholm, and a rather one-sided game resulted in a win for the ‘Greens’ by 3 goals to nil, tries being scored by Sharpe, Macnee and Patterson, all of which were converted by Tom Scott.

A stubborn game ensued by Jed-Forest and Melrose, and after changing ends and playing extra time the former secured the victory.

The final between Hawick and Jed-Forest was an exciting affair, extra time had to be played, and at last Mabon got over for Jed-Forest.
