Beasley Media has flipped Alternative “Alt 92.9” WBOS Brookline/Boston MA to Classic Rock “Rock 92.9“.
Positioned as “The Next Generation of Classic Rock”, the new format is focusing on Rock hits of the 1980s and 90s with core artists including Guns & Roses, Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Nirvana, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Green Day, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin, Stone Temple Pilots, Van Halen, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The station retains the Dave & Chuck The Freak morning show with the new format.
The new format positions WBOS between iHeartMedia Classic Rock 100.7 WZLX and Entercom Active Rock 107.3 WAAF. WZLX was sixth in the Boston market with a 5.3 share in the February 2019 Nielsen Audio ratings, while WAAF held a 1.8 share. WBOS’ now former Alternative format had been trending upwards from 2.3 to 2.7 to 3.3 over the past three monthlies.

What a MORONIC move!!! Alt 92.9 just posted its strongest ratings in years!
This station will get eaten alive by the market’s FM sports stations along with WZLX. No one wants to listen to a classic rock station with an abbreviated playlist.
The novelty of a “classic rock” station playing staple artists that WAAF has already played for 20 to 25 years will wear thin quickly.
Yeah that’s exactly what I thought. Why blow up a station that’s gaining traction in the market?
If a heritage station like WAAF is pulling a 1.8 surely a 3.3, up a full point in 3 books, is something to be impressed by.
It obvious they’ll be squeezed by the other rock outlets
The template for Rock 92.9 is the new version of WLLZ in Detroit. You won’t hear any British Invasion bands — yes, the Rolling Stones are British Invasion — but you will hear a whole lotta Led Zeppelin.
