The objective of the petitions process in the European Parliament is to ensure that you have the opportunity to communicate with Parliament and express your right to petition, which is one of the fundamental rights of all European citizens and residents, enshrined both in the Treaty and in the Charter of Fundamental Rights. Your petition allows Parliament, through its Petitions Committee, to conduct an ongoing reality check on the way in which European legislation is implemented and measure the extent to which the European institutions are responding to your concerns.

What did citizens achieve via their petitions ? A significant number of petitions have led to legislative or political action, EU pilot cases, and sometimes even preliminary rulings or infringement proceedings.
The Committee on Petitions has adopted its annual report for 2022. It takes stock of the committee's activities, starting with the handling of the 1217 petitions submitted by EU citizens and residents. The top petition themes this year include the environment, fundamental rights, justice and external relations.
