Hotel staff can speak good English. Room is clean.
Rest room should be a bit better.

The location is right downtown, a short walk from the Bund. The standard double I used was every bit of what I expected: clean, well-appointed en-suite bathroom, firm and comfortable bed. Perhaps some of the other reviewers were expecting luxury at those prices? The staff were friendly and helpful and spoke reasonable English. When I checked out they had a housekeeper check the room: just as well, since I had left my raincoat!
The hotel is definitely aging, but quite gracefully. The carpets (in my room at any rate) could have done with replacement and, while they were about it, there were one or two floorboards that squeaked.

Despite having only limited English the hotel staff were very helpful. Staff booked our bullet-train tickets to Beijing, and overnight train tickets from Beijing to Xian without any bother and kept the tickets in the lobby for us. Very helpful. The location is great. Only a couple of minutes walk from the Bund. The view from our window of the intersection below is a fascinating way to watch the chaotic Shanghai traffic. We liked the 1930's decor too. The room was tidy, clean and comfortable.

Very good location only a few minutes walk from the Bund. The nearest metro station is a about 10 mins walk away on the main shopping street. We liked the 1930s style of the hotel and it's in much better condition than some of the people have commented here. I don't expect people in China to speak much (if any) English and the reception staff spoke enough to communicate. My room was large, the mattress a bit thin, and not much of a view but then that's China. I was only using the room to sleep / recover from the extreme heat and humidity of the city - the hotel A/C works very well fortunately. I would definitely stay here again.

The hotel was a 10 minute walk from the main shopping district in shanghai and the building itself was wonderful, although a bit tired (a bit of the roof appeared to fall off outside our room while we were looking out the window!)
We felt that some of the staff (not all) were a bit rude and unhelpful. Many times when we arrived back to the hotel we found staff to be stood on the inside of doorways, like bouncers, who didn't get out of the way when we entered. The rooms were also a bit tired, with dirty carpets and ancient bed sheets.

Location is good, most attractions are walking distance. Given that location its reasonable price.
This is a long list, staff is very UNwelcoming, they don't event smile, bed is very uncomfirtable, wash room had broken tap's, furniture needs replacements, I will not stay ever in this hotel.

Great location.
The bells woke us up every morning at 5am and the staff were very unfriendly. The air conditioning did not work and the rooms smelt of stale smoke.
