Let us start this edition by wishing you all the best for the new year, hoping that you've had a smooth start into 2020.

The kick-off in Brussels has been quite intense, as you may find out, with the European Commission sharing important updates on its key initiatives and with the European Parliament holding a plenary debate on housing. Get all the updates and our reactions in a nutshell below.

On the funding front, there is good news from the EIB and the CEB that continue supporting our sector, this time with two loan agreements in Germany.

At the same time, our team in Brussels is excited to welcome two new members that we invite you to meet!

In the Read // Watch // Listen section get up-to-date with the OECD Affordable Housing Database and listen to an interesting BBC Radio Show looking at the Global Housing Crisis.

In our Projects section we are excited to announce the kick-off of our new flagship Horizon 2020 project 'Syn.ikia' focusing on plus energy sustainable neighbourhoods.

EIB lends EUR 240 million to Gewobag

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing the state-owned housing company Gewobag, a GdW member, with a 240-million-euro loan, which is earmarked for the construction of 2,000 new residential units by 2023. This cooperation aims at supportiung affordable housing supply in Berlin.

CEB supports social housing in the City of Leipzig

The Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) will support with a EUR 58 million loan the increase in the offer of both affordable and social housing in the city of Leipzig, through the construction, renovation and modernisation of rental housing for low-income persons and the construction of day nurseries.

Our team in Brussels has recently welcomed two new members! We are happy to introduce to you Clara Mafé and Eva Sporer.

Clara has joined the project and innovation team and you will soon be hearing about our new projects from her. 
 
Eva has joined the team as an intern for 6 months and after specialising in urban studies will be available to feed your examples to the housingevolutions.eu, while supporting our work on Communication and Research.

The OECD Affordable Housing Database gets updated

The OECD Affordable Housing Database has been recently updated and we invite you to have a look at this tool that helps countries monitor access to good-quality affordable housing and strengthen the knowledge base for policy evaluation. It brings together cross-national information from OECD countries, Key Partners and EU member states. The database groups indicators along three dimensions: housing market, housing conditions and affordability, and public policies towards affordable housing.

BBC 'Real Story' on affordable housing

The BBC World Service Radio show 'Real Story' looked at the world's housing crisis in one of its latest episodes. Paul Henley and a panel of expert guests discuss the big challenges facing local authorities and city dwellers around the world.

Projects
Syn.ikia kicks off

As you will be opening this newsletter, the partners of the consortium will be having the Kick-off meeting for the Horizon 2020 'Syn.ikia' project in Trondheim, Norway. Syn.ikia aims at achieving sustainable plus energy neighbourhoods with more than 100% energy savings, 90% renewable energy generation triggered 100% GHG emission reduction, and 10% life cycle costs reduction, compared to nZEB levels. This will be achieved while ensuring high-quality indoor environment and well-being. The main strategy for achieving these goals is to deliver a blueprint for sustainable plus energy buildings and neighbourhoods, leading the way to plus energy districts and cities.

Syn.ikia will be our flagship project for the years to come and we will soon be able to share much more information and material about it.

Equipping building professionals with new skills to achieve European energy targets

The BUILD UP Skills Initiative gets further updates based on the findings of EU-funded projects that have designed and implemented impressive upskilling programmes, including PROF-TRAC (Housing Europe was part of the consortium).

Housing Europe contributes to the INHERIT final conference

Housing Europe Deputy Secretary General, Julien Dijol was a speaker at the INHERIT final conference that took place on December 10th 2019. Over 150 stakeholders joined the event entitled “A Future for All to INHERIT: Taking Action Now”. Julien contributed to a session that looked at ways for ensuring healthy and energy efficient housing for all, suggesting ways how to replicate energy-ef-ficient social housing.

Housing Europe Working Committee Meetings (*)
Brussels, 4-5 March 2020


Housing Europe members and partners gather twice a year in Brussels for the Working Committee meetings that are usually combined with other events and the networking dinner. The draft agenda for the upcoming March meetings is now available.

European Energy Poverty Observatory Event

Save the date for the next European Energy Poverty Workshop. The event is co-organised by Housing Europe and the European Policy Centre and will be held on March 3rd, 14:30-17:00 on the European Policy Centre (EPC) premises, Rue du Trône 14, 1000.
