Orphaned and alone except for an uncle, Hugo Cabret lives in the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris. Hugo's job is to oil and maintain the station's clocks, but to him, his more important task is to protect a broken automaton and notebook left to him by his late father. Accompanied by the goddaughter of an embittered toy merchant, Hugo embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of the automaton and find a place he can call home.

I have a canker sore on my left tonsil. Every time I move anything, eat anything, or swallow it feels like someone is stabbing my throat. Based on past experiences I’m assuming I got it because of stress. It’s finals week, I’m applying for internships, I’m in the midst of pre-production for a short film I’m shooting in a few weeks, and I’m trying to find time to watch all of Scorsese’s films.
My mind is a tornado right now and my body is in pain, but for 2 hours and 6 minutes Scorsese guided me through a story full of childlike wonder that I haven’t felt since I was, well, a child. Everything disappeared and cinema took over in a genuinely beautiful and moving way. Now back to finding some ointment for this canker sore.
can everyone just do me a solid & agree with me that sacha baron cohen is actually hot
one of the only movies about “the magic of the movies” that actually captures just how miraculous cinema can be. a way for us to connect together, even just for a few hours, to see worlds and images that were considered impossible. it moves me beyond words to know that one of cinema’s greatest treasurers made a film for kids about how beautiful the artwork is, creating the same effect for an entire generation that he received from old prints in a library. we come to movies on our own paths through life but what matters is that we’re all here now, together, united by celluloid.

A profound love letter to the art of cinema and its history: The creation of cinema, the evolution of cinema, and the importance of the preservation of cinema. Scorsese channels his inner Spielberg while delivering what is not only one of his absolute best pictures, but one of his most personal pictures, and the filmmaking itself is truly masterful across the board (Robert Richardson, Thelma Schoonmaker, Dante Ferretti, and Howard Shore are all doing wonders here).
A criminally undervalued masterpiece. It’s films like this that make me go, “This is why I love cinema.”
scorsese's love for cinema fuels my love for cinema. i'm so mad at my dad for not taking me to the movies to see this when i was a child.
A funny thing about watching movies as a father of two children is that anything in a movie that even speaks to the relationship between a father and a child makes me cry now, which is to say that this movie made me weep.
there are very few movies out there that look this good. one of the only others i can think of is spielberg's west side story. looking back, it really feels like we cracked something about incorporating digital VFX in that 2009-2012 era and then lost it. the perpetual steam and clockwork and warm glow permeates and comforts the soul; everything about the atmosphere here is cozy and november-coded. also: amazing, frankly, that Marty finally made a family movie but decided to also make it a history lesson about early cinema and film-preservation in disguise. i still remember reading Brian Selznick's original novel in elementary school and being so excited that they were making a movie; it's insane how much the…
