Panagiotis Makris
My name is Panagiotis Makris and I am a PhD candidate of Byzantine History in the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities at Ionian University in Corfu, Greece.
Currently I am a Research Fellow at the Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies in Venice, Italy and my research project is entitled "A Byzantine scholar in the years of the plague: illness and death in the work of Demetrios Kydones (1324-1398)". The research project is related to the subject of the spiritual history of Byzantium, and it specifically focuses on the concepts of illness and death in the14th century Byzantium. In particular, the research aims at the investigation of the reception and semantic treatment of the above concepts by the Byzantine scholar and official Demetrios Kydones (1324-1398), with the expectation of a comprehensive approach to all ideological nuances and related social perceptions. The research is a part of the wider scientific field of Byzantine Studies and especially in the context of the study of the mentalities of late Byzantium and the so-called Palaeologan Renaissance.
I hold a BA in Philology (major in Medieval and Modern Greek Philology) from Faculty of Philosophy, Department of Philology at University of Ioannina, Greece.
In October 2017 I started my studies at the Ionian University, Department of History as an MA student in Methodology of Review and Publication of Historical and Archival Sources. At that time my research focused on the history of Byzantine and post-Byzantine Chresmology, Eschatology and Apocalypticism. For the purposes of my thesis [thesis title: “Χρησμολογικά‒ εσχατολογικά κείμενα από δύο χειρόγραφους κώδικες της Ιεράς Μονής Προυσού. Πνευματική και κοινωνική λειτουργία.”] I transcribed five unpublished prophetic texts that belong to the Ottoman Period of Greece; also I analyzed their intellectual and social use and evaluated their dependence on their byzantine prototypes. In October 2019 I graduated first of my class (Greek grading system: Excellent 9.63/10, UK grading system: First-class honours).
In November 2019 I started my PhD studies. My research aims to examine the Perception of the Body and the Conceptualization of Disease, Healing and Death in the Late Byzantine Scholars (1204-1453).
My research interests focus on Byzantine Studies, particularly in Conceptual, Social and Cultural History of Byzantium. More specifically my research deals with the evolution of paradigmatic ideas and value systems in Byzantium over time, such as the concepts of the human body, disease, healing and death. Therefore, I am also currently interested in Byzantine Philosophy and Theology, Medieval and Byzantine Cultural Studies, Byzantine Hagiography and Monasticism, Byzantine Literature, Patristics, Gender and Queer Studies, History of Medicine and Greek Palaeography.
Supervisors: Ilias Giarenis: Professor of the History of Byzantine Paideia, Ionian University, History Department, Faculty of History and Translation-Interpreting.
