GP2 is, according to multiple league sources, having a good summer. One source: “He looks good.” Another, more cautious, source: “So far, so good.” His father is somewhere in between. “He’s doing good,” Payton Sr. says. “Just a few nicks here and there. A little thing with his elbow, but nothing he can’t play through. His conditioning is good. I believe he’ll be ready (for training camp).”
It’s a market inefficiency that NBA GMs would be wise to correct. After studying the results of over 2,000 draft selections since 1989, new research suggests that second-generation athletes are vastly underrated compared to their pedigree-free peers. Many of the nepo-ballers slid on draft night. Some of them — Seth Curry, Gary Payton II and Wes Matthews Jr. — weren’t drafted at all. An Eastern Conference GM reasoned, “You don’t want to rank him high just because of his father, so maybe you underrank.” The longtime exec dubbed it, “The Seth Curry Phenomenon.”
Warriors' Gary Payton II opts in for 2024-25
Kendra Andrews: Gary Payton II has opted-in to his $9.1 million player option for next season, sources tell ESPN. By opting-in, Payton II now has the flexibility to extend with the Warriors this offseason.
Jason Anderson: The only players the Sacramento Kings are listing on their injury report for Tuesday’s play-in game against the Golden State Warriors are Kevin Huerter (out with a torn labrum) and Malik Monk (out with an MCL sprain). The Warriors have ruled out Gary Payton II (calf strain).
Anthony Slater: Steph Curry’s ankle is fine after the tweak the other night. Warriors resting him today, but Steve Kerr said he could’ve played, if needed. Gary Payton II’s calf tightness puts his status more in doubt: “We’ll see over the next couple days on his availability for the play-in.”
