2DM Applications

EU Funded

Graphene is one of the world's most interesting and versatile materials, and is now joined by other related 2D materials to push innovation even further.

Graphene is the world's first two-dimensional material, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, it has a set of unique and outstanding properties. As well as being the thinnest, strongest and lightest known material, graphene is flexible, impermeable to molecules and extremely electrically and thermally conductive.

However, as the world strives to maintain its pace of innovation, graphene has been joined by other related 2D materials (2DM) all of which have much to offer.

These 2D materials are helping to facilitate the next generation of technology: from 5G telecommunications, to flexible mobile screens and casings. They often have excellent sensing ability which will enhance the next generation of wearable electronics and drive the internet of things.

2DM also have a unique combination of properties coupled with ease of incorporation into composite materials enable advances in the composite world. 2DM also expand the realm of possibility within the biomedical sector, paving the way for targeted drug delivery and biosensors.
