I am looking forward to watching the characters fight in unison; laughs shall abound, methinks.

LOL oh so true.. I had just tried this game yesterday after not having played it for close to 20 years and boy the only thing I missed was the music.

If you can find the music to this game on the Roland MT-32, you’ll understand.. otherwise skip this one entirely, the gameplay is so bad for something they obviously spent alot of time on..

Spending hours running around complex and confusing dungeons with a party of characters that bounce around like kangaroos.
Winning battles was as complicated as holding down the space bar whilst standing up against a wall.

Nevertheless, what was legendary was actually the sound. I was blessed with a Roland MT-32 MIDI Synthesizer and I have to tell you, the graphics look totally out of place when you get to hear it sound so awesome. The cheaper Ad Lib seemed more in par with the graphics.

The aging system was a novel idea, and made me feel a little sad, seeing the characters whittle and die over time. The spell system, and career system was ridiculous and 99% useless / redundant.

Summary: The gameplay was dull, although pioneering in some of it’s concepts. The music was well ahead of it’s time in the gaming world.

I don’t deny that it was innovative for its time; heck, I think it’s still innovative even by today’s standards. Falcom’s been reviving/reimagining a lot of their series lately, so with any luck Sorcerian will get the same treatment and we’ll get to see those cool ideas make a return.

Both games still bring fantastic memories to me and its hard to accept such a bad score for any of those. Sorcerian brought a plethora of inovation and was especially brilliant and original at its time. Of course the balance is unperfect but the game never felt easy for me when I was playing it as a kid.
In the end, Sorcerian stays one of my all time favorite after 20 years of hardcore gaming.
