Animal Welfare / Pigs, tail docking - Finland

EU legislation on the welfare of pigs (Council Directive 2008/120/EC laying down minimum standards for the protection of pigs) does not allow routine tail-docking and requires farmers to provide to their pigs "manipulable material" such as straw, hay or sawdust. To better inform famers how to prevent routine tail docking, the Commission developed educational materials. The two videos present success stories in achieving the goal of rearing not-tailed pigs.

TR@CES: Animal traceability - 2015

The European Union has implemented identification rules based on certain fundamental principles and a traceability system for all farm animals.

The Trade Control and Expert System, known as TRACES, is an online management tool of the European Commission that tracks the journeys of every consignment of animals within the EU and these movements create TRACEABILITY. All consignments of cattle are required to be accompanied by a health certificate and travel documents, and national authorities are obliged to post these documents ONLINE through TRACES.
