    From Old Galician-Portuguese passaro, from Vulgar Latin *passarum, from Latin passer (sparrow), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *p(e)t-tro- (who flies, bird), from *peth₂- (to fly). Compare English passerine, Spanish pájaro, Romanian pasăre.
