Etymology

From Proto-Polynesian *motu (compare with Maori motu) from Proto-Oceanic *motus (broken off, detached), possibly from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ma-utus (compare with Malay putus (to snap, to break)).[1] Sense of large ships extension from sense of island because of their gigantic size compared to the typical waʻa.[2]
