menzogna

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Italian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From a Vulgar Latin *mentionia, probably from a crossing of Latin mentiōnem with mentīri, or derived from a Late Latin mentiō (lie), itself probably from a hypothetical *mentītiō from mentītus, past participle of mentior. Compare Old French mensoigne, Romansch manzögna, and Sicilian minzogna from the same source. Compare also French mensonge, Occitan messorga, messonja, and Romanian minciună from different but related roots.
