Philwiki progress

[edit]

Please come by Philwiki to help build the structure, so we can open it to the public by April. Donbas 02:16, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd love to come by and help. I'm afraid though that I won't be able to commit as much time and effort into it as I once thought. I will try to help as much as I can please accept my apologies. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 02:34, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the last warning for this user... but s/he has already been blocked and is now just repeatedly blanking his/her talk page. I've reported him/her on WP:AIV already. (You wouldn't happen to be an admin who could block him/her from editing the talk page, by any chance?) Hbackman 04:16, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly, I'm not yet an admin otherwise I would have blocked this person for sure. I have a roll back button but I'm not an admin. My experiences with WP:AIV are that it is slow to get much of a blocking response. At least this user is only vandalizing his own page. Keep up the hard work! ¡Dustimagic! Hawaii

[edit]

The "author" of the Hawai`i page on Wikipedia is biased, and has provided misleading information on that page which include, Ilocano and NOT Tagalog is the third most spoken language. Fails to mention other famous people from Hawai`i, such as the first Hawaiian Governor in the US, John Waihee III, first Filipino Governor in the US, Benjamin Cayetano, first female and Jewish governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle, Astronaut Elison Onizuka of the Challenger, etc... Add to that, none of the OKINA symbols do NOT work!!! The statistics are screwed, as it fails to mention that Filipino is the most rapidly growing ethnic background in Hawai`i, overtaking Chinese AND Japanese. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.92.51.86 (talkcontribs)

You may feel that the article is poorly written But you can help make it better. However, rather than blanking it or removing huge sections of it you should express your thoughts on how it can be improved on the article's talk page. That would be far more productive. Thanks. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 07:18, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm using a laptop, and I have difficulty using the fingerpad, and may have accidently deleted the page, trying to edit the information. I've tried speaking to the author, but has not responded to my messages. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.92.51.86 (talkcontribs)

Ok, I understand. That is a common problem with a lot of what is called "vandalism." Be patient with the editor. Also, I would reccomend that you consider getting an account. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 07:22, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I do have an account, I forgot my username. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.92.51.86 (talkcontribs)

Well then why don't you press the button to request a new password be sent to your e-mail address. Also, can you please sign your comments like this on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~). Of course if you forgot your user name though that's a whole different problem. I suggest creating a new account. Thanks. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 07:30, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AIV vs VIP

[edit]

Hi Dustimagic/Archive 2. I noticed you added an entry to Vandalism in Progress. That page is only for very specific cases, as described by the page's guidelines. Your alert would be better placed on Administrator intervention against vandalism (WP:AIV), where it will usually be processed within minutes. Many alerts that are incorrectly placed on Vandalism in Progress are never dealt with, simply because they become old before an administrator gets to them. Thanks for your efforts. :) --lightdarkness (talk) 01:21, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I think I accidentally put my request on vandalism in progress because I was in a hurry and clicked the wrong link. Thanks for letting me know. I know WP:AIV is a lot faster as you can tell by looking at how long some of those requests have been on the page. Thanks again. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 04:00, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Mountain Creek Lake Bridge.png. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that your image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If your image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why your image was deleted. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Dethomas 07:26, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Mountian Creek Lake Bridge.png. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.

It seems like the {{Fair use in}} tag, source information and a fair use rational on the image description page would be the most useful thing you could do here. Regards, Dethomas 07:31, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:American Revolution

[edit]

I was reverting vandalism, hence the rvv, but you got there first ;-) i.e. started my revert after you did you first one and the IP had vandalised again, but before you did your second one. You started and finished your second revert quicker than mine completed. There must have been minor difference in what version we reverted to, and for some reason it didn't edit conflict. Hope that makes sense- I wasn't trying to revert your actions, just some weirdness in the software and WP servers being slow for me again! Petros471 19:35, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I understand. I know you didn't revert my edits. I have done a similar thing myself where I have somehow reverted a revert due to the servers/software so I had to revert my revert immediately. Also, just a note reverting vandalism is great but rvv may not be the most adequate of an edit summary it is always better to metion the people involved. No worries. Have a nice day!. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 19:39, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I generally use rvv because it's the quickest. It's arguably more useful than the automated pop-ups edit summary, which mentions version number but not specific reason or people. Also I generally assume that rvv means revert to the last version by the previous editor before the vandal. I'll certainly try in more complicated reverts to mention in more detail who/what I'm reverting from/to, but in simple cases I'll probably stick with speed. Btw, do you use god-mode light or some other rollback script that does your revert summaries automatically? Petros471 11:36, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I did the same thing until I got go-mode lite, or just took a long time to revert. It is amazing! I use a cobination of Lupin's tool and god-mode lite. It saves so much time a makes reverting edits fun and fast. I would highly recommend it. The revert button with god-mode lite is extremely helpful and is almost as good as the admin one I have heard

. Thanks. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 13:52, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to install god-mode lite, but apparently it only works in Firefox (I use Opera). For me it broke Lupin's tools, as well as not working, so I got rid of godmode and am sticking with popup's, which I find useful for a lot more than just reverting vandalism. Someday I might get the real rollback tool... Petros471 14:01, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I got a message from you thanking me for "experimenting" with Wikipedia, when I had edited the article Ey Reqîb. That wasn't experimenting, I was fixing it, can I not do that unless I have an account on the English Wikipedia? /kristnjov (from the Swedish WP)

My apologies, I will try to use my best Swedish. I'm sure it is not very good. Not knowing the history of Ey Reqîb, I thought Hey Enemy was some type of vandalism. Please except my apologies. I have reverted my edits to your edits on the page. Please ignore my warning. No, you do not need an account to edit the English Wikipedia. Have a nice day. ¡Dustimagic! Principles of system architecture

[edit]

Hi, You apparently initiated a vote that resulted in the deletion of my principles of system architecture page: I wasn't aware of the Original Research policy, and now that I'm aware of it I have no problem with the deletion. However, you also mentioned you kept a private copy of the page, and I hope you still have it, as I didn't have any other copies and it was a lot of work lost for me when the page was deleted. Can I please have a copy if you still have it? Thanks,

User:YoavShapira

I don't recall saying that there was a private copy kept. However, I see you have recreated the article on a separate site and solved this issue. Thanks. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 15:30, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandals

[edit]

You may wish to consider using test1 through test4 instead of bv. Read User:Mindspillage/admin#Blocking if you want a good explanation of why. Also, many admins will not block for one instance of vandalism, unless it is truly blatant (the types you have been warning against have been more of the silly or nonsense variety.) Just a few things to think about. KillerChihuahua?!? 18:57, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at my edits I do 9+ times out of 10 use the test warnings. Also, the blockings I requested on AIV were not for a single act of vandalism. I have been here long enough to know that admins don't block one-time vandals, unless of course they have been blocked many times recently. Please check you facts before explaining to me again something I already understand and do. The reason some of my warnings jumped immediately to test 4 or bv was because of my review of that IPs previous recent acts of vandalism; often to the same article that had been reverted and left unwarned by other lazy RC patrollers. Thanks. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 03:19, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think don't test1 was ever intended to be used for blatant vandalism {{subst:bv}}, deliberate adding of nonsense {{subst:test2}} or deliberate false information {{subst:verror2}}. Unfortunately in my opinion many people seem to have totally got the wrong end of the stick on what the purpose of WP:BITE was meant to be applied for. I don't think it was ever intended to indicate that we should use test templates inaccurately it was just meant to be applied where newbies do silly things like upload a bunch of images without tags or add well intended but badly formatted templates to articles. In those cases you I totally agree that we should not bite, but we should apply warning templates accurately to give other users a correct impression of what sort of edits the user has made previously. Arniep 14:48, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your thoughts on the whole test warning system. As warning for vandalism is subjective this leads to inconsistencies and disagreements. Have a nice day! ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 15:04, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That is exactly right. Not only that but I frequently check to see if people post a warning after reverting vandalism and unfortunately numerous times they don't post any warning at all, effectively making a nonsense of the whole test template system and allowing a lot more vandalism to occur before the user gets blocked (if ever). Arniep 15:13, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's very true. Thanks again. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 15:17, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very sorry you were dragged into this, Dustimagic - you seem like a very nice person, and had I known you would be receiving so much attention concerning this I would have refrained from commenting on your page. One small caveat: be aware that biting newbies is a serious issue, be aware that Arniep is speaking only for himself, and be aware that not very many people support his revision of the policies. KillerChihuahua?!? 00:17, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I agree the warned many times thing was incorrect. I was using a copy and paste AIV vandal addition notice that I have used before when it is true; however, that is no excuse. My personal opinions on the whole vandal warning issue lie in the middle of don't biting the newbies and bv warnings. I think after a couple of "tests" the person is obviously a vandal because otherwhise they would have gone to the sndbox or stopped all together. Inconsistencies as far as block times and warnings lead to confusion and disinterest from anons. I wasn't really being badgered, but thanks for apologizing anyway. I appreciate your thoughts. I think the bv I added might have been in mistake as I believe I was warning multiple users around the same time and might have copied and pasted the wrong template. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I would like to wish you best of luck on Wikipedia. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 01:25, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey...thanks for the handshaker in return! I have the belief that people tend to do better work on here when they know that we are all working together and do notice each others' work. I have been trying to focus on people who are posting but have no user talk posted yet, as some can post for a long period of time without hearing anything. Sadly, many of us only hear from someone when we have done something that somebody else judged as problematic. Peace, Kukini 06:07, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support. I don't understand some of the oppose votes as many of those editors have voted support for users who have been here for equal or lesser time and had equal or less edits. My experience with voting on Wikipedia is that people tend to be like sheep early on and go for the vote they feel most comfortable given the previous votes. Nevertheless I recognize other's viewpoints on adminship etc. Thanks again. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 00:54, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Don't sweat the naysayers. I find a lot of users on Rfa have rather arbitrary requirements, and vote erratically (even the more experienced ones). If the numbers trend as they are now, I think you'll be an admin for sure. Cheers -- Samir (the scope) 01:08, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome message template

[edit]

Hey there! I see you've been using my welcome template, however it'll link to my talk page if those users want to ask for help. To solve this I've made a template for you :)

To use the template, just use the code {{User:Dustimagic/Template:welcome}}.

It produces a message like this:

Welcome to Wikipedia!

Hello Dustimagic/Archive 2, and welcome to Wikipedia! The first thing you should know is that we encourage you to be bold. Feel free to edit and improve articles, by clicking any 'edit' link.

If you'd like to test what Wikipedia can do, check out the sandbox - just type and save the page and your text will appear. That's the beauty of a Wiki.

For more information check out our tutorial - it's designed with newcomers in mind, as is the help section. If you'd like to get involved with current projects, have a look at the Community Portal. There are always tasks for users to do, ranging from copyediting to expanding stubs.

I hope you'll enjoy your time here, but be warned, it can become addictive! Feel free to message me, I'm more than happy to help. As an added tip, sign any message you post so users know that you've said it. To do so is delightfully simple, just use the wikicode ~~~~. Aloha, please accept this WikiWelcome Lei as a welcoming gift for your arrival to Wikipedia.

Once again, welcome!

I hope that helps. Now you can enjoy welcoming and helping others! James Kendall [talk] 14:57, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

[edit]
Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Congratulations!

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia 04:25, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations Dustimagic. Please let me know if I can ever be of assistance to you in your new role. Best, Johntex\talk 17:10, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations. Here are what pass for words of wisdom from the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

My RfA

[edit]

My RfA recently closed and it was a success, passing at 84-02-00. I would like to thank you for taking the time to weigh in and on your subsequent support. And I know it's quite cliche, but if you ever need any assistance and/or want another opinion on something, grab a Pepsi and don't hesitate to drop me a line on my talk page. Thanks again. Thanks for the quick work on the vandal. I've got another one for you, the anon editing Jehovah's Witnesses, 3rr violation, and referrring to them as a "cult" is nonsense. SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 07:22, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal 2 has been blocked for 24 hours. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C)
If he keeps this up after the block, I will make sure next time he gets blocked for at least several days/week(s). ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 07:28, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome template

[edit]

Hello Dustimagic - I just got tangled up in your lei, quite by accident. User:Captain_ginyu posted a question at the help desk. I replied there, and also went to User_talk:Captain_ginyu to make the same reply. Being a lazy editor, I clicked on the "edit" button in the Welcome section, rather than the "Edit this page" button. I added my comments and hit save. Only then did I realize that doing this meant that I had been editing your sub-page, not Captain ginyu's Talk page. I will probably not be the last person to make this mistake, so you might want to consider ways to prevent it ("subst"ing your message perhaps)? It is a cool message though. Best, Johntex\talk 01:30, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, thanks yeah I need to subst my message. I do that with test warnings but I think I forgot to with my welcome message, I'll fix that right away. Thanks for letting me know. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 03:15, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
