Killer whale FPC

Hello. A Featured Picture Candidate you commented on, Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Killer whale mother and calf, is now in the section for "Older nominations requiring additional input from voters." Contributors have tried to improve it after you commented, and your opinion is welcome as to which, if any, of the available versions deserves promotion. Remove the Forced Redirect

[edit]

You should probably remove the forced redirect on "Eric Dill." He is no longer with The Click Five and is pursuing a solo career. I just went a double checked, and I think the images your composite was made from were actually taken by Australians, not US navy. Since they're aussie, crown copyright applies, and it's non-free. We can probably make a case for fair use, but it's gonna have to come off the commons and should probably be delisted as an FPC. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 02:21, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Forced Redirect - Please Remove for Eric Dill

Fair use rationale

[edit]

Hi Chris, I've seen that you've uploaded the Image:ShipPamirFalklandIslandStamp.jpg under a fair use license. Could you please add a rationale for the license? As Wikipedia has several free images, I'm not sure what to base it on. Thanks, Ibn Battuta 17:36, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Achso, ja, auf das Datum hatte ich noch gar nicht geschaut. Da das Bild neu im Artikel auftauchte, dachte ich, es sei neuer... Würde es Dir etwas ausmachen, wenn ich das Bild zur Löschung melde? Fair use rationale for Image:Salt Satyagraha.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Salt Satyagraha.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 22:06, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

IHO did Not decide to only sea of japan use

[edit]

Vandalism notice

[edit]

A user has been repeatedly changing the Sea of Japan image from using internationally-accepted naming to using the naming advocated by South Korea. Please restore it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Okurisama (talkcontribs) 03:13, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • about sea of japan/east sea edit.

the Ninth Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names elected to retain the title of the body of water as "Sea of Japan". <<?

actually, iho chief said,
"I encourage the three countries concerned to find a solution acceptable to all of them, taking into account any relevant solutions, or else to agree to differ and to report the outcome of these discussions to the next conference."
IHO did not decide to only 'sea of japan' naming use.
The IHO declined the name use both "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan". They did not decide to only sea of japan name use.
1. IHO cheif said, "these discussions to the next conference."
2. Previous IHO's map delete that only "sea of japan" name use.
3. The latest meeting of the International Hydrographic Organization ended without any changes, but South Korea is happy because the head of the organization suggested the moniker “Sea of Japan” be deleted from the world’s oceanographic maps until an agreement on the disputed name can be reached.[3]
4. so, IHO did not decide to exclusively "sea of japan" name use.
According to IHO's technical resolution,
It is recommended that where two or more countries share a given geographical feature (such as, for example, a bay, strait, channel or archipelago) under a different name form, they should endeavour to reach agreement on fixing a single name for the feature concerned. If they have different official languages and cannot agree on a common name form, it is recommended that the name forms of each of the languages in question should be accepted for charts and publications unless technical reasons prevent this practice on small scale charts. e.g. English Channel/La Manche. [4] [5]
so, exclusively 'sea of japan name use' did not permited. "Sea of japan/ East sea"(same use) is right.
I correct from JPOV edit. also, i already discussed in this page.[6]Panelequal3 05:12, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Check the wikipedia Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean)

[edit]

Check the Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean). According to Wikipedia naming convention,

Per the vote that took place from 18 July 2005 to 8 August 2005 here, this is the new naming convention for the body of water that separates Japan and Korea:

  1. For all international articles use: Sea of Japan
  2. For all Japan articles use: Sea of Japan
  3. For all Japan/Korea and South Korea articles use: Sea of Japan (East Sea)
  4. For all Japan/North Korea articles use: Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea)
  5. For all Korea and South Korea articles use: Sea of Japan (East Sea)
  6. For all North Korea articles use: Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea)

Per the conditions of the vote, use (East Sea) only once at the first mention.

so, Sea of Japan (East Sea) is right.

admin, you must check first WP:NVPanelequal3 09:54, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is an international article. Hence Sea of Japan. -- Chris 73 | Talk 09:59, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photo use

[edit]

I want to use a photo of yours on a protest sign. The photo says, "u can use this image freely for any purpose, including commercial use, provided that you license it under one of the above licenses. My suggestion is to use the following text: This Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons image is from the user Chris 73 and is freely available at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Whale_meat_on_dish.jpg under the creative commons cc-by-sa 2.5 license." What does this mean? It seems to mean I have to put these words on the photo, which is about the same as saying I can't use the photo as a photo. Is this correct? I'm not trying to license the phote. I tried to understand GNU Free Document License but it does not seem to apply to photos. The Creative Commons seems to be about commercial use only. I looked for this information on Wikipedia but could not find it. Thanks for the help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.225.2.17 (talk) 05:43, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What or how do you want to use the photo? The text usually goes e.g. in the subtitle or the credits, but this depends on how the photo is used. The CC license in this case also allows for commercial use (otherwise it would say "NC" for non-commercial) -- Chris 73 | Talk 09:39, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I want to use it on a save the whales protest sign. Not an article, or caption, or subtitled movie, or with credits, it's a protest sign-I wouldn't have to protest if whales or the poor or the innocent had voices and words. The point of a photograph at times is to convey 1000 different words-which this photo does. If I add text people will ignore the image and focus on the words. Watch people at an art gallery or a museum some time-they spend more time on the words and lose the image. Is it possible to use this image as an image, without words?
Technically, you would have to have a small print at the bottom of the poster with the credits. That does not have to be on the photo. You could also put it on the back of the poster. However, realistically, I don't think anybody would mind or care about the particular license. I added the license so others don't use the images commercially without continuing to share the photo, and have no problem with you using it on the poster. So go ahead and just use the picture. BTW, which pic are you interested in? -- Chris 73 | Talk 08:35, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, your permission is sufficient. No one would mind or even notice except for me as I'm an artist and you might for the same reason. The whale meat. It's linked above.
You're welcome. Also, if you're interested - the whale meat tasted really bad. All the white stuff is fat and grease from the blubber, and only the red part is actually meat, and even that was not very nice. I have no interest in eating that stuff ever again. Best wishes, -- Chris 73 | Talk 12:26, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photo Use

Hello,

I am the general editor of the Zondervan Illustrated Bible Background Commentary: Old Testament, a five volume academic reference series on the backgrounds to the Bible. One of my responsibilities is to gather photos for the project. I encountered your photo on Wikimedia Commons "Snake Goddess Crete" and even though it is licensed under Creative Commons cc-by-sa 2.5, my publisher would like me to request your written permission to use it in my book outside the restrictions of that licensing. I would need non-exclusive world rights in all languages for both print and digital formats. You will be given credit in the work for your photo as Chris 73 unless you would like the credit to read differently. Thank you. John H. Walton —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jkwalton5 (talkcontribs) 03:56, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I would prefer to keep the license as is. The only difference for you is that in the credits you would have to mention the CC-BY-SA license. This license allows free commercial use, so it does not cost you any more, you only have to add a few words to the credit. Maybe your publisher misunderstood the license term, please check. Cheers, -- Chris 73 | Talk 07:23, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Permission to use Advertisement from Edo Period (Urgent!)

[edit]

Hi Chris,

I like you have lived in numerous places throughout the world and have a particular love for Japan, hence my SN.

I would really like to you your image on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advertising the one of the advertisement from the Edo period. I read the license agreement but am a bit confused. I would like to use this image in a brochure that will be distributed for non-commercial purposes through my work. But we are a non-profit organisation and I would just like to make sure that I stay clear of any issues, would you please get back to me when you get a chance? My deadline is tonight and I can't find any other photos that fit in with the argument so perfectly.

Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kobe83 (talkcontribs) 14:57, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. No problem. Just add the text This Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons image is from the user Chris 73 and is freely available at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Edo_period_advertising_in_Japan.jpg under the creative commons cc-by-sa 2.5 license. somewhere on the brochure. Can be small print. If you don't have enough space on the brochure, you can shorten the text if necessary, as long as Wikipedia and the CC-By-Sa 2.5 is mentioned. And if even that is not possible, the image is so old, it is public domain by now anyway. Just go ahead and use it. Cheers -- Chris 73 | Talk 16:08, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Model of historical imperial palace in Edo.jpg

[edit]

hi there Chris 73,

I stumbled across this image of yours on the Commons [7]. Where did you see this model? And are you sure that it's the "imperial palace of Edo", or is it rather the "shogun's palace in Edo"? 1845 the Shogun was still in power. Hope to hear from you, domou.. Gryffindor 01:55, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If i remember correctly, it was the Edo-Tokyo Museum. I thought it was the Edo Palace, but I have to check my sources again. -- Chris 73 | Talk 07:14, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Omon-logo.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Omon-logo.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

I have tagged Image:17th_Lancers_badge.jpg as no rationale, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Thank you. Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:ColdFusion.jpg. I noticed that that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. Barnstar of National Merit for Australia

[edit]

Hi, Just noticed that you created that BNM for Australia.

It looks really good, well done!

Would like to point out something that you may wish to address, and please feel free to tell me to pull my head in!

When displaying the Australian Flag from the canton, by heraldic and vexillogical convention the Union Jack should be display in the first quarter, ie top-left quadrant -even though the flag appears 'back to front'.

"Flag against a surface whether horizontally of vertically:The top left quarter should be placed uppermost on the observer's left, as viewed from the front" ( The Australian National Flag Association [9])

Anyways, I'm not here to make a noise or anything. I just thought that given you've made a tremendous effort with it, that you might wish for some constructive feedback.

Orphaned non-free media (File:German Troops In Warsaw.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:German Troops In Warsaw.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:10, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oversighting GT sock's edit summaries

[edit]

I think that his edit summaries on your talk page should be oversighted. Momo san Gespräch 貢献 21:49, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Momusufan, thanks for the comments on Tojo. I'd rather not have my talk page protected, the vandalism is not really a major bother to me. Plus, my talk page is not that much frequented. As for the edit summaries, I don't mind these either. Anybody with two brain cells looking at it will know who's the real moron in these edits. Oversighting them would be a lot of work, since these kind of edit summaries are also found on a number of other pages, where Tojo reverts my edits. Overall, no action is needed except to let the filter do it's job, as you put it. Nevertheless I definitely appreciate your concern and help. Re: Rationale for move

[edit]

Hi, I'll explain why. The most common name is Diaoyutai Islands (as shown in Google search, outstripping Senkaku Islands by more than a quarter). I flipped through the archives and revealed that the last time such discussion took place 2 years ago, and may not reflect that consensus can change. That's why I have tried to get people to comment on it, but nobody said anything after 2 weeks and even the archive bot came around to archive it before I moved it.[10] This surprised me because I don't know why not much interest is generated this time. OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:38, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, we'll give it a few days and see. And as a heads-up, I will be camping this weekend (Friday to Sunday) so if you don't see me around, it's not because I'm trying to find a place to hide and avoid the discussion ;) Take care, OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:52, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this is the swim hall

[edit]

I believe that your photo (Yoyogi National Gymnasium - Swim.jpg) is actually the smaller of the two buildings comprising the Yoyogi National Gymnasium, the picture having been taken from outside the original swim hall (looking roughly South West). As far as I remember (and have been able to verify so far) the larger was the one that housed the swimming at the 1964 Olympics, and this one housed gymnastics. You can see the interior of the larger hall in this You Tube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj-N0BGoLmo&feature=player_embedded#) and you can see the floor layouts just a bit in this archtectural article (http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Olympic_Arena.html). Neither building seems to be used for swimming now (though my sources aren't very good on this), and the venue was not on the 2016 Olympic bit venue list for swimming. I am still looking for better documentation on this, but am planning to add this photo to a Gallery in "1964 Summern Olympics", as well as the "Yoyogi National Gynmnasium" article (which discusses only the larger building as though it's the whole thing). Perhaps this photo should be renamed. I can't verify right now (I keep getting SNAFU messages) if this is used anywhere other than in your gallery. WP:CANVASS is about alerting people of discussions and where the discussions could be unfairly swayed in one direction, or too many people are contacted directly on their talk page. None of those apply here. Chris 73's notice is for very long-term cross-wiki spammer, m:Keith Bridgeman AKA General Tojo (talk · contribs), not a discussion; it's helpful to every non-banned user, not just one side of a discussion; and it's only on three or fewer talk pages per wiki, not user talk. You and another ru.wp editor, Ghirlandajo (talk · contribs), are seeing this completely wrong, and you're the only two that have complained. Wknight94 talk 12:47, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the comment. For many articles, there is a group of editors that take care of this particular article (reasons being personal interest etc). My goal was to alert these editors about the commercial cross-wiki spamming of their articles, something that they won't notice if i write it on a noticeboard somewhere else.(Note: commercial in a sense that Keith Bridgeman is trying to make money by ripping off dead authors, but judging from the Amazon sales ranking his work sells very slow and I believe so far his costs by far outweigh the income :) Hence I believe that the minor inconvenience of adding the note to three articles per wiki is acceptable. Hope you understand -- Chris 73 | Talk 15:24, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that the material you added to the article Toilets in Japan has been taken down. I was going to reinstate it, but it is unsourced. Do you remember what your source was for this edit? Thanks. EdgeOfEpsilon (talk) 09:49, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The title for an image you kindly uploaded to the commons is incorrect. I would change it, but unfortunately i do not know how. If you'd be interested, please visit the image's discussion page where I noted the correct title.

Request permission

[edit]

Hi Chris 73,

I'm a SF Bay Area artist, and I'm working on a small, self-published coloring book of images of the divine feminine from around the world. As I cannot afford to travel to Crete, I must rely on photographs of this figurine to create my derivative image, or not include her in the book. I would love to use your photo of the Minoan Snake Goddess to help create my illustration, and would like to give you attribution (and using your full name would be great). However, since I will have to publish the book myself, I do plan to sell the book for a modest fee, and copyright the finished illustrations and text.

I am writing to ask for your permission to create a derivative illustration from your photograph for the use in my project, and I would be pleased to attribute the source photo to you.

Thank you in advance, Retrograde Raven (talk) 22:51, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Chris 73,

I am writing to ask permission to use the file: Monkey Fist How To.JPG. We should like to use it in our company newsletter, which is printed and sent out to all our clients worldwide - we are a marine insurance company. The text suggested for crediting photos is rather lengthy: "This Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons image is from the user Chris 73 and is freely available at http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Edo_period_advertising_in_Japan.jpg under the creative commons cc-by-sa 2.5 license." Would it be sufficient to state the following instead:

"Source: Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Monkey_Fist_HowTo.jpg".

Thank you in advance.

User:Osbcla —Preceding undated comment added 12:21, 24 February 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Hi. Please include the CC-BY-SA license in the text, for example: "Source: Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Monkey_Fist_HowTo.jpg", licensed under the CC-BY-SA common license". Then everything is fine. Hope this helps -- Chris 73 | Talk 22:45, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Conflicted licensing on image File:FremontTroll.jpg

[edit]

The above noted image or media file appears to have conflicted licensing. As an image cannot be both 'free' and 'unfree', a check of the exact status of this media/image concerned is advised.

Because you've contributed to FPC either recently or in the past, I'm letting you know about the above poll on the basis of which we may develop proposals to change our procedures and criteria. Regards, Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 01:25, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Asking permission to use one of your photos.

The intent is to use this photo "as-is" as illustration accompanying the main text, acknowledging the source. Permission: crow eating the shark Photo

[edit]

Hello, I would like to use your image of the crow eating the shark in part of (possibly the main part of) the art of an underground heavy metal release. If it is the cover art, I would like to be able to have the name of the band and release either on or next to the image. I would put the full citation required in the credits of the release. The citation/credit preceding it would be one of the following:

Cover Art: Chris73 [full citation]

or

Raven photo: Chris73 [full citation]

Are there any difficulties or objections? Any change you would like me to make? Any questions? Anything I should know?

Thanks very much

File permission problem with File:Waiter's Corkscrew.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Waiter's Corkscrew.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 05:10, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris 73,
coming over from Commons. Is it correct that File:Barlach Magdeburger Ehrenmal.jpg was originally uploaded by you? If yes, did you originally shoot this image or was it taken from somewhere? No offense meant, but that question is critical, as PD-Art on Commons does not cover 3d pieces. --Túrelio (talk) 10:27, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, he took this image himself. Please see File talk:Barlach Magdeburger Ehrenmal.jpg; it's also mentioned here in the deleted history. Also see the deleted revisions at the commons; in particular [12]. The sculpture is clearly PD by now in Germany. So, unless Chris objects we could even upload the larger photo he originally uploaded (1011×1469px), which is still available in the deleted history here at en-WP. Non-free rationale for File:Montagsdemonstration in Leipzig.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Montagsdemonstration in Leipzig.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Nautilus Cutaway

[edit]

Hi Chris, I really like your image of the nautilus shell, it is beautiful. I would like to use the picture on my company website for a page with minimal text. Do you require that the attribution text is shown in close proximity to the image, or can it be elsewhere? For example, could the text be contained in a tool-tip when users hover on the image, or could it be included in a block of "small print" at the base of the page? I could also have the image link straight to the article at Wikipedia if that would be sufficient - it's really just having large blocks of text displayed near the image that I want to get away from. A final option would be a completely separate page on the site, available through the main navigation menu, that contained image credits.

Please let me know which of the above approaches is acceptable.

Many thanks. Si c80 (talk) 02:03, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:GeneralJamesGrant.jpg needs authorship information

[edit]
Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:GeneralJamesGrant.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which: will produce an appropriate expansion,
    or use the own template.
  • If this is an old image, for which the authorship is unknown or impossible to determine, please indicate this on the file description page.

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Chris 73,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk)

Photo Request

[edit]

Hello, I'm a member of VANK(Voluntary Agency Network of Korea) who rectifies the errors in Korean history. Recently I visited your website and found this page;동해. The second map in this pageImage:Japan sea map.png points the sea between Korea and Japan as 'Sea of Japan(East Sea)'.

However, these names should be corrected. Using an improper name for 'East Sea' brings to mind Japanese imperialism and unfairness to Korea. It is an absolutely mistaken thing to hear one side of story and follow. If we let this kind of things alone, it brings about a serious problem to disturb order of International society.

Accordingly, I urge you to use only 'East Sea' to describe the body of water in question or both Korean and Japanese designation simultaneously. (e.g. 'East Sea/Sea of Japan')

I inserted hyperlinks about East Sea below this talk. Please click them and read the articles.

I hope the error in this map could be corrected as soon as possible. Thank you.

P.S.I do not use talk page, so please mail me if you have some questions or corrected the map. (jeenam96@naver.com)Jina96 (talk) 06:42, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

*How to name the sea (Especially the sea between Korea and Japan)http://korea.prkorea.com/wordpress/english/2012/03/13/how-to-name-the-sea/

You're certainly welcome to your opinion. Wikipedia, however, decides the names of places based on the name most commonly used in English. In fact, the name "Sea of Japan" is actually written right into our guidelines because of past disputes on this issue; you can read those at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean)#Sea of Japan (East Sea). Also, we have an interesting article on the subject at Sea of Japan naming dispute; if you have any new sources that might be beneficial in further filling out the dispute, please discuss them on that article's talk page. -- Chris 73 | Talk 16:21, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Did you take this photo in the city of Nara or in Nara Prefecture?

[edit]

Hello, Chris.

I'm planning to use this image of yours:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Making_mochi_with_an_Usu_and_Kine.jpg

It will go in an essay on the kanji 臼, which I'll post on my website (www.joyokanji.com) this coming Friday.

The photo caption includes this text: This Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons image is freely available at under the creative commons cc-by-sa 2.5 license.

And I've credited the photo to Chris 73 with a link to your Chris 73 page.

My question: Did you take this photo in the city of Nara or in Nara Prefecture?

Btw, I'm happy to send you a copy of the essay if you like. Just let me know how to get it to you. It'll be in PDF form.

Thanks very much!

Image permission

[edit]

Hi Chris, regarding the images above, can you please take a look at Wikipedia:CONSENT and follow the instructions on how to provide proof that the original author of the photographs gave you permission for them to be released under a free licence? If you have the original emails from 2004, you might want to try sending them first to see if someone on OTRS accepts them as permission. If the wording isn't right though, you might need to contact the photographer again. Let me know if you have any queries. Thanks SmartSE (talk) 17:54, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:NotarchusPunctatusSeaSlug.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:NotarchusPunctatusSeaSlug.jpg.

You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. Bathroom humor

[edit]

Greetings Chris 73. I was curious if you knew where I could find data regarding the following bit of Wikipedian history that revolved around the article Toilets in Japan. At its creation by you the article included a statement to the effect that there were suggestions that the water jet was used as an aid to female masturbation. That statement lay undisturbed (and was included in the article when that article gained "Featured article" status) until about 2006, when it caught the scandalized eye of an unregistered editor from the UK who removed it because "there were no references" to the claim or something to that effect. Some years later somebody included a similar statement, this time mentioning "sexual stimulation" instead of "masturbation", and this time the article was sourced to a Mainichi Shimbun article, or blog, or something. Again the statement caught the eye of some scandalized Japanese Wikipedians one of whom removed it with the edit summary that "it wasn't true" (not an exact quote). And now comes the comical part of the story: one or several editors who tried to revert that removal on the grounds that the claim was sourced ended up being blocked, banned, I don't know, and the Japanese censors won the day. Currently the article contains no such statement. Did you follow that saga? Or were you by then working on other things, had lost interest in the article and did not pay attention to what became of it. I've tried to piece out what happened from that article's revision history but it's not that easy. I'm asking all this because on my user page I plan to have some anecdotes regarding Wikipedian history and I'd like to find more facts about a story that would be a killer anecdote. As you can see I've got the title of that anecdote all ready. Cheers. Signed: Basemetal (write to me here) 23:14, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Basemetal, first of all I am honored that you feel my article worthy for inclusion in your anecdotes. Definitely let me know what came out of that. As for the statement, i first added it when I wrote the article (which, by the way, was one of the quickest articles ever to gain feature status, only coconut crab (also by me) was faster, methinks. When I added it i was fully aware that a lot of people will find the idea of masturbating with a toilet revolting. But then, when you talk with emergency room doctors you will find out that they have to deal on a daily basis with surgically removing "masturbation aids" out of somebody's rectum or elsewhere (from lubricated rodents to mobile phones). Hence I added the info anyway, since Wikipedia should not care if the information is likeable, only if it is true. On that respect, my source was also rather weak, the equivalent of the british "yellow press". But since then others brought up many more sources, albeit none of them "scientific". Unfortunately, due to demands in my real life I did not have the time to follow this problem up close, and only acted if people wanted to remove the whole article from feature status on the grounds of yuckiness. It was eventually removed due to lack of citations, which i did not have the time to fix (again - real life demands). Hope this info helps. Also, if you are looking for lore, you can also go into the "Gdansk" vs. "Danzig" conflict, including edit wars with behind the scenes email collaboration to push the polish name. Cheers -- Chris 73 | Talk 09:06, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll definitely keep you posted. Was your source you call weak an article published in the Mainichi Daily News, an English publication of the Mainichi Shimbun? Or is this from later than 2004? The "article" (or "blog entry"?) here appears to criticize the original article for wilful mistranslation. As usual, the claim is that "Japanese people would never do such a thing" etc. Signed: Basemetal (write to me here) 00:45, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Files missing description details

[edit]
Dear uploader: The media files you uploaded as:

are missing a description and/or other details on their image description pages. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors make better use of the images, and they will be more informative to readers.

If the information is not provided, the images may eventually be proposed for deletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.

If you have any questions, please see Help:Image page. Thank you. Theo's Little Bot (error?) 09:08, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could you explain your deletion of this file? It says that you deleted this as redundant to a different file in the same file format, but you also wrote that it was redundant to a vector file, and vector files can't be in the same file format as a JPG file, so it seems that the file didn't satisfy the criteria for WP:CSD#F1 in the first place. --Stefan2 (talk) 18:58, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The SVG image is in my view higher quality, even though it is not a 100% identical representation. Hence I deleted it. However, if you want the file back I do not have a problem with it either. Just let me know. -- Chris 73 | Talk 05:56, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter if it is in higher quality or not. As long as it isn't pixel-to-pixel identical (or reduced resolution) and in the same file format, then you can't delete it as F1. --Stefan2 (talk) 09:53, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried to explain. Evidently he is the only user on Wikipedia that never forgot to log in or log out or was bumped off. He has now exposed my IP to everyone. At least I think it is my IP. I really do not know and would have to deliberately log out to know. He has only been on Wiki for one year and I will give him the benefit of the doubt that it is his mistake in answering in that tone and in that place. Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). File permission problem with File:Muffin01.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Muffin01.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

Requesting permission to use NautilusCutawayLogarithmicSpiral

[edit]

Hi Chris 73. Your nautilus shell cutaway photo is stunning! Thank you for posting on wikipedia.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NautilusCutawayLogarithmicSpiral.jpg

I would like to request permission to use the photo in an upcoming textbook Introduction to Computer Science, to be published by Addison-Wesley. It would appear next to other images from nature of logarithmic spirals. Would it be possible use the photo with the credit "Photo: Chris 73 (CC by-SA license)" under it (as there is not much room for text). We would include a link to the photo and the license on the accompanying website. If preferable, we could put the full credit on the second page of the textbook?

Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Chris 73. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Chris 73.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Notice

The article Margaret Hogg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This appears to be the biography of a person whose only claim to notability is their murder. If I am correct, then this fails to meet Wikipedia's notability requirements.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
