Prior to the 1900 census, there were not questions for ethnic group, only for mother tongue. The first census ever was held in 1880. The results of the 1892 census by mother tongue are as follows:
2,505,326 (75.7%) spoke Bulgarian language as mother tongue
569,728 (17.2%) Turkish
58,518 (1.8%) Greek

The results of the 1887 census by mother tongue are as follows:
2,326,250 (73.7%) spoke Bulgarian as mother tongue
607,331 (19.3%) the Turkish
58,326 (1.8%) the Greek
50,291 (1.6%) the Romani/Gypsy
23,571 (0.7%) the Jewish;
The results of the 1880 census in Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia by mother tongue are as follows:

Languages
The 2001 census defines an ethnic group as a "community of people, related to each other by origin and language, and close to each other by mode of life and culture"; and one's mother tongue as "the language a person speaks best and usually uses for communication in the family (household)".[14]
Religion
The majority religion in Bulgaria is Orthodox Christian, with a large minority of Sunni Muslims. Since the last two censuses (2001 and 2011) provide widely divergent results, they are both shown in the table below. It is noteworthy that over a fifth of the population chose not to respond to this question in the 2011 census.
2001 [15] 2011 [16][1] Orthodox Christian 82.6 % 59.4 % Muslim 12.2 % 7.8 % (7.4 % Sunni; 0.4 % Shia) Catholic 0.6 % 0.7 % Protestant 0.5 % 0.9 % Other 1.9 % 0.15 % None 3.6 % 9.3 % No response 0.3 % 21.8 %
