Biography
The first part of Louis de Funès' career is laborious and he plays a multitude of supporting parts. In 1956, he gains some recognition for his role in The Trip Across Paris, directed by Claude Autant-Lara (1956), co-starring Jean Gabin and Bourvil. But it's only at the beginning of 1960s, with the stage play (Oscar) and a film (Pouic-Pouic, directed by Jean Girault, that Louis de Funès is truly launched. At the time, he is already approaching 50. After The Sucker, Gérard Oury proposes a new role to De Funès, that of a designated member of the Resistance. And it will be the success of Don't Look Now - We're Being Shot At, which leads to record attendance. From there on in, De Funès lends his cantankerousness to essentially two directors: Gerard Oury (The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob) and Jean Girault who offers him the role of Inspector Cruchot in the Gendarme series.
