  • Summary Statement of Research Interests

My academic interests revolve around the poetics of sound symbolism in relation to philosophies of language and psychology, at the intersection between “nerve” and “word.” My dissertation examines the contact and interchange between classical psychoanalysis and Russian/Soviet thinking in the two decades before and after the Bolshevik Revolution, arguing that what allowed psychoanalysis to pass the break of 1917 and flourish in the 1920s was largely due to the concept of the “drives” (Triebe). Modernist literary experimentation of the period is important in this regard, and I consider ways in which literature assumed the role of psychology within Russian intellectual history.
