On search for optimal control in a problem of bio technology

Published: 14 June 2007 Publication History

Abstract

Bioreactors with fed-batch cultivation technology are widely used in industry. The fed-batch process can be externally controlled by means of the feed rate defining concentration of substrate in cultivation medium. The problem to find a feed rate function maximizing a yield of biomass of cells at the end of the fed-batch cultivation cycle is an optimal control problem whose solution is challenging because of nonlinearity of the model. An algorithm for finding optimal control is developed reducing the original optimal control problem to a finite dimensional optimization problem. A case study is presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the developed algorithm.
