Abstract
The end portion of the alimentary canal, the large intestine, measures about 180 cm in length and from 3 to 8 cm in diameter. Its walls vary in thickness from 0.5 to 2 cm. The sigmoid colon, about 4–5 cm in diameter, interposed between the rectum and the descending colon, is 15 to 80 cm long, and forms wide convolutions of variable aspect. It is distinguished endoscopically by the presence of rather well-marked semilunar folds and by the velvety appearance of its mucosa.
