Abstract

Pervasive computing systems are physically bounded spaces of physical and digital devices such as desktop computers, laptops, handheld devices, and sensors. These systems attempt to integrate the information space of computers and the physical space of the real world. With multiple devices and heterogeneous inputs, seamless interaction with these systems remains a challenge.  We have developed an input system that overcomes many obstacles facing users in pervasive systems. We provide support for multiple users to control multiple mice on the same display. We also provide an interface using a video stream, allowing the user to click on devices shown in the video to control other devices in the room.  Finally, we demonstrate experimentally that these techniques are useful in a pervasive space and do not impose a significant overhead in our system.  Using our system, users are able to seamlessly interact with pervasive systems through a single, universal input.
