Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)

The Toronto International Film Festival, which entered its 49th edition in 2024, was founded in 1976 as the Festival of Festivals. The establishment of the event aimed to screen films from other festivals, and it has become one of the world’s largest annual showcases for cinema. It is attended by both industry insiders as well as the general public.

The festival was renamed the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 1995. Programming — which includes press conferences and screenings of major international and Canadian films — runs for 11 days starting the Thursday after Canadian Labour Day. Since 2010, programming operates out of TFF Bell Lightbox, a five-story building complex that contains theaters, galleries and more film resources.

Between 300 and 400 films are screened at TIFF each year, and an audience of over 250,000 people attends. TIFF coincides with other film festivals and the start of the fall movie season, which feeds into the Academy Awards in addition to many other awards shows come winter of the next year. Many Oscar campaigns kick off with debuts and premieres at TIFF with the hopes of generating buzz around the films early enough for voters to get them on their radar.

The festival also provides a showcase for Canadian short films and filmmakers. The Platform programme, which has been around for nine years, showcases the work of directors from all over the world with previous selections including Barry Jenkins' Moonlight and Darius Marder's Sound of Metal. The 10 films in the Platform programme are eligible for the Platform Prize, $20,000 CAD which goes to the best film in the group. Judges also award prizes in categories like best Canadian feature film and best Canadian short film. The Best Canadian Discovery Award returned to the lineup in 2024 after a hiatus of five years. The People’s Choice Award for the best film at TIFF has crowned many films that have gone on to be nominated for or even win the Best Picture Academy Award. The festival added People’s Choice Awards for best documentary and best film in the festival’s “Midnight Madness” category which features more indie and genre movies that gather cult followings.
