Doctor Who: Doom’s Day

I had no expectations about Doctor Who: Doom’s Day coming in. I didn’t pay much attention to Time Lord Victorious, the previous cross-platform multimedia event back in 2020, because I find chasing content across different venues tiring. Doom’s Day is 24 hours in the life of Doom, a time-traveling assassin played by Sooz Kempner. She’s chasing down the Doctor in an attempt to prevent her own death at the end of the day. There are multiple parts ranging across books, […]

Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia Part Two

The fan-favorite storyline concludes in this volume, collecting the four issues of the miniseries. The previous book ended with John coming face-to-face with Irene Adler, thought to be dead, in a mysterious, deserted power station. That’s where Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia Part Two picks up. Irene and John spat, Sherlock rescues Mrs. Hudson from the Americans, and events spiral wildly out of control from there. It was so much fun reliving the events of this episode. The second season […]

Doctor Who: Missy

I gave up watching Doctor Who midway through the Eleventh Doctor’s run, because what I wanted to see differed from the showrunner’s ideas. (It happens. In my rewatch, I will eventually get there.) I regret, though, that means that I missed out on the Master becoming Missy (played by Michelle Gomez), cause she looks cool. So I was glad to see that the latest Doctor Who comic from Titan was all about her. All four issues of the miniseries are […]

Arsenal FC: The Game We Love

I was curious about Arsenal FC: The Game We Love because I know very little about football (as most of the world terms it; “soccer” to us US heathens). After reading this loving tribute by Philippe Glogowski, I don’t know much more about the sport or how one wins a game, but I do feel that I’ve been introduced to all the best and favorite moments of the past twenty years or so for this team (dating from 1996-2016). It’s […]

Adler (Collection)

The Adler miniseries, promoted as a “League of Extraordinary Gentlewomen”, has now been collected. It’s written by Lavie Tidhar and illustrated by Paul McCaffrey. I was not fond of the first issue. The story didn’t substantially change in future issues, but I was more entertained by it, read all at once. The action careened from one ridiculous happening to another. In one issue, that felt slight; as one longer ride, it was less annoying to me. Plus, there were more […]

Adler #1

Although I wanted to give Adler #1 a fair shot, the reliance on cliche and overly familiar elements made it just another forgettable action thriller. It’s written by Lavie Tidhar and illustrated by Paul McCaffrey, and I previously posted some preview pages and covers. I liked the idea of teaming up a bunch of women who transcend the expectations of their era, but I object to most of this first issue actually being about Jane Eyre, who’s pulled from watching […]

The Beatles: Yellow Submarine

Titan Comic is justifiably proud of its recent release of The Beatles: Yellow Submarine, a graphic novel adaptation of the animated movie to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary. I’m told that it’s a faithful reproduction of the movie — KC liked it, for example — which I believe, although I think I’ve only seen the film once or twice. The book definitely made me want to watch it again, because the print version I found mostly effective as a reminder […]

Doctor Who: The Seventh Doctor #3

I don’t normally bother reviewing wrap-up issues for miniseries, but this one deserves a few notes for doing things well in unusual fashion. “Operation Volcano” began in Doctor Who: The Seventh Doctor #1, written by Andrew Cartmel and illustrated by Christopher Jones. It involves the discovery of a spaceship in the Australian Outback, a conspiracy group, alien “snakes” that possess people, and other touches that bring home the 60s time setting. Although the Doctor (the Seventh, obviously, originally played by […]
